DVD Region questions
Discussion
Been trying to use my PS2 to play DVD’s but where I am at the moment (Malta) seems only to sell region 1 DVD’s and my PS2 will only play region 2. So I wondered if the PH “Oracle” could answer the following questions:
Is it legal to sell region 1 DVD’s in Europe? I thought they were for the US market only.
How can I tell what region a DVD is for if it doesn’t say so on the sleeve? I picked up a copy of Master And Commander which had no indication of what region it was for. When I asked the shopkeeper he informed me that it was region 1 because it was marked as NTSC format. Does the fact that it’s NTSC or PAL always indicate region 1 or 2 respectively?
Does anyone know an easy way of converting my PS2 to a multi-region DVD player? I’ve done several google’s on this but they turn up pages for out of date products from when the PS2 first came out and nothing current.

Try www.avforums.com
I've used DVD Shrink 3.2 to take an original DVD, reduce it in size slightly to fit a 4.7 DVD-RW, and also make it regionless in the process. Theoretically you're losing some quality, taking it from 6.something gig to 4.7 gig, but I've got to admit I can't notice any difference (on my 36" TV)
Takes 1/2 an hour, and if you do it to DVD-RW or DVD+RW it doesn't cost anything ....

If it is and I dont know, why not just buy them from the states something like www.playusa.com/
I often buy US DVD's to play in the UK as they are usually released months before the UK market. I have a multi region DVD player, why would they sell them if they did not think people would buy DVD's from different countries.

Its not legal to sell them in GB, which is why play are based in Jersey I believe
These sites might be of interest -
Hacks for your dvd player to make it multiregion, ways to copy DVD's etc, and 'no cd' patches for your games.
(The no cd patch is good if you play one game a lot - my son wore out the centre of Colin McRea Rally making it fit for the bin!)

It is possible to make A PS/2 play Region 1 DVD's without modification. You need to buy this
www.play.com/play247.asp?searchtype=PS2&searchstring=dvd+region+free&page=search&Go.x=0&Go.y=0
DVD Region X does the same job but is more of a pain to use as you need to enter a "lonnnnng" code to make it work. Most modern TV's "recognise" NTSC as most makers use chip sets that work with NTSC and PAL formats becuase it's cheaper to produce the chips with both on and use them in both types of sets. The only other major difference is that European sets have the SCART connectors and American sets had composite/S-video inputs. Now the "component video" sockets appear on both.

Cheers for the feedback folks. Some people on avforums.com suggested DVD Region X as well. The other one looks OK but it appears to need a SCART lead and I’m using component video to a projector. This is only temporary until I get a dedicated multi-region player anyway.

The problem is I can’t play region 1 ATM but all the DVD’s over here are region 1 anyway so buying them from USA wouldn’t really help

I wonder........... I have heard that you can buy region 0 DVD's that should work on all players, might be worth a look.
