Had a slight sore throat yestarday, so plied myself with vitamins and orange juice in hope that it would die down and I would have caught it in time.

Wake up this morning with the mother of all sore throats, any ideas on how to quell the pain enough to enjoy tonight??

I would go for the easy option of taking it easy and not bothering with tonight (the sensible option), but Im hosting a party and some of my friends have travelled quite a distance.

Presume alcohol will help, but since Im hosting its kind of bad form when the host falls over drunk first.

Any ideas??

Cheers in advance for all suggestions (I hope Im not the only person in work today)

I'm in work too...sadly

I use Chloroseptic(sp?) spray. It's strong and effective.
Try making the 'ahhhh' sound as you spray the back of your throat to really hit the mark.

Happy New year

Note: Most chemists should stock this

Whats your excuse for working today??

Mine was I agreed to support the project Im working on because some of the testers and analysts decided to turn up, I didn't realise they weren't actually going to do much and now Im completely bored.

Never again!!

Strepsils are usually pretty good. The old folks in my family say gargling with salty water is helpfull.
Of course being the second or third to fall over pissed is no shame at your own party - it's all about timing!!
Hope it all goes well.

Chloraseptic contains a mild anaesthetic. It's excellent and worth tracking down

similar stuff, project going live in march (deadlines cant be changed) and a section of it isnt built yet (overtime for me)and the rest is slowly making its way through system test and when I say slowly we are talking painfully slowly!!

I can see egg on face for some people, oh and this has been in the pipeline for 2 years now and on a shelf for at least 12 months of them 2 years.

Thank god Im not supporting it through the live transition.

I can see me working every weekend from now till its in an acceptable state....... oh joy

i have been mostly using it myself Merocaine (?sp) lozenges do a similar job. Unfortunately they both make everything you consume taste foul

Cheers all for the advice, have now got myself a throat spray, it does seem to ease the pain and soreness.

Roll on tonight, although think I will stop using it an hour or so before the party, I don't like the sound of foul tasting beer and spirits.

OK, get back out to the Chemist and buy some Vocal Zone Lozenges and plenty of Pineapple Juice. The Lozenges taste awful but a lot of singers use them before performing if their throat is iffy. The juice will lubricate the throat well. Then this evening, the odd dark rum and Blackcurrant will soothe pain as well.
Take this along with Beachams flu plus caplets and the hottest chilli you can eat at lunchtime followed by some more sleep and you'll be fine. Works for me!

or gargle with soluble asprin. although don't get cheap stuff, get more expensive stuff because it is less gritty and you don't want it rough when you're gargling. tell the pharmacist what its for, and they'll give you nice tasting stuff.

Merocaine is the answer. You have to ask for it in the chemist, but the power of the stuff blows Strepsils and the like into the weeds.

Gargle hot salt water with a liberal dosage of TCP - makes your teeth go numb, but if done 4-5 times (3-4 gargles per time) before tonight your throat will be fine - Although you may have that "distinctive" but clean smell!!

Cheers

my ex was a pharmacist and always recommended these. Also a good tip is to get a bottle of full sugar ribena and drink gallons of hot ribena's. Soothes the throat, adds vitamin C and helps you pee out the virus quicker (recommended by my Doctor and never fails).
