I`ve been delivering to a few supermarkets since christmas, and the amount of outdated food going for landfill is awful. I spoke to a manager about it and apparently it has to be destroyed for tax reasons! Absolute far king scandal.

My mother went to a certain supermarket on the 22nd December and commented on how much of the stuff with best by dates was going out date on that actual date. Needless to say she purchase less stuff there than she intended to.

My mum went to M&S before Xmas, she asked if they had more stock as the shelf stock expired on 24/12 (this was on 23/12). Mum explained this was no good as it was needed for Boxing day and could not be frozen. M&S staff said it was against policy to put out new stock until old had been sold.

Mum went to Tesco and spent +£150 there.

Tax reasons? That sounds unlikely, although I could understand if it was for enviromental health reasons.

We managed to get a half price turkey on Christmas Eve, its now sitting in the freezer awaiting a suitable occasion.

Before supermarkets there wasn;t such waste because you visited the grocers in advance, placed your order, and the shop knew what to buy. These days the supermarkets don;t know what to stock!

Apparently, they can write off losses against tax if they can show a paper trail leading to disposal.

Thats the problem with ordering on the net, they give you the fastest expiring stuff. When I go shopping I go digging to the back of the shelves always. I don't care if I plan to eat it that evening, I'm just convinced that fresher food has to be superior...
