I'm no medic, but recurring bouts of pneumonia, pluracy and bronchitus also lead to scarred tissue and in some cases, pulmonary fibrosis. I only know this as my Mum has it.

If its true that its caused by the metals used for the screens, then they will have to find another way pretty damn quick. There's no cure for PF. Just Stage 1, Stage 2 and then 6ft under.

That's a sad story

The danger is in the manufacturing, not in the viewing pleasure that these modern wonders bring

Phew, that's a relief. Sensationalist headlines know no bounds.

So you're quite happy that someone making your tv dies for it?

Have some compassion man!

Nobody was that concerned with the tens of thousands of men who died (and still do) digging coal out of the ground to keep us warm.

If we felt guilty about the products and goods we use because there is some danger inherent in the extraction or manufacturing process, we'd end up dying ourselves (of starvation, hypothermia, disease etc etc).

Call me cynical, but with flat screen TV prices falling the way they are, it seems like a nice story to force prices higher again (lack of supply due to changes in manufacturing processes) - similar to what happened in the LCD PC screen and Ram chip market.

the problem lies with Manufacturer greed and consumer demand, we the consumers want ever cheaper products, the manufacturers are after profit. By outsourcing manufacture of 'health risk' products/ processes to under developed countries where health and safety of employees is not a priority, the manufacturers can advertise of investment in the developing world (whilst saving a fortune), which makes us feel justified in saving a few quid.
Another product that isn't allowed to be made in the West for health reasons are 'sodium cooled or filled' exhaust valves. I believe the last plant knocking these out was in Brazil. Yet the majority of 80s/90s turbo cars had them, you can still get them as well.

I think we are all guilty, to an extent, of supporting these obnoxious practices by turning a blind eye to what doesn't happen on our own doorstep to suit our own ends.

Erm Its ok we had a mad bitch called maggie put a stop to all that some time ago. She found an alternative though we now buy goods made by chidren as young as 5 chained to machines on starvation rations and beaten until they perform. They are then disposed of when they die. In China the "family police" perform enforced abortions on low income families with 1 child. The mindset of the liberal seems to be "out of sight out of mind". Tax and squander on transferring the dirty jobs to the third world because their pollution enables us to clean up. I cant wait for all this to collapse as it surely must.

RANT MODE ON

lets stop the government from making our coal competitive in the market place by listening to that Yorkshire man with an axe to grind, have a bout of fisticuffs with plod(who is on loads of overtime), smash up the pit maintenance gear, so the workings flood and collapse, alienate the majority of the population with powercuts and force everyone to buy Polish coal, which happens to be a lot cheaper! Inspired!!lets apply this to our other industries, oh its happened to car manufacturing, ship building, steel,aerospace.......
Makes me sick

Erm I am so sorry but the government are the managers. Therefore they should and do manage things. So the coal industry went west cos of the workers did it? The same applies to shipbuilding does it? Perhaps the health service and the education system are also victims of union sabbotage? Power without responsibility is the disease and governments have been riddled with it for generations. Wake UP
