We've been given an electric heater - there's no plug fitted just the bare wires. But I'm confused as there are 4 wires; yellow/green, blue, brown, and black. Any ideas guys?

Very odd.

Is it UK spec?

If so it should have a plug fitted already (as the govt. has decided we are too stupid to fit our own plugs).

It's not some big industrial twin phase heater is it!?

Edited to say:

I would assume the usual green/yellow=earth, blue=neutral, brown=live. Don't know about the black though...

Is there a panel on it somewhere saying what the input should be?

It was originally installed in a house that's having a bit knocked down (its not new). and having underfloor heating too, lucky devils. Will have a look to see if there's a panel that's got some info

I suspect that the brown and black are live feeds to two seperate elements. Sort of 'a bit hot' and 'hotter still'.

Put the spare wire in the fish tank.

You can then warm the house and the fish!

Just trying to help.

So the government can introduce a new law stopping people doing most DIY electrical work? And the new wire will be a good giveaway that the job was done after 01/2005 ...

I had something like that in an extension flex cable - I cut the black one back to the base of the flex and just ignored it....the appliance worked fine just using the other 3 wires

If its the type I think it is the black is a calling for heat thermostat wire and can be ignored. But check out inside the appliance. I take it this heater is not new?

This may be the dumbest post of the day, but.....Are you sure that the black is actually a cable and not just a central rubber "core". I only ask because I once had an apprentic ask the same question about the middle bit of a length of 7 core (trailer socket).

Apologies if I`m talking ballocks.
