Cracked a tooth in half last night, its still in there but half of it is loose and its a smidge painful. As I can't get it seen to until the 27th if it gets too much over Xmas any reason I can't remove it myself? Is the recommended method still grip, push, twist slightly, pull ?

Cheers
Matt

crash test dummies - A Worms Life - He Liked To Feel It said:
There was a boy
Who liked to wiggle his tooth loose so he could show it
And then we'd watch
While he would tie it to a doorknob, wind up, and then slam it

And that was how he liked to have his teeth pulled out
He told us how he liked to feel it when it came out

But he grew tired
Of using doorknobs and so he thought up a brand-new trick
He said he'd tie
His tooth to his dog's tail, find a stick, wind up, and then throw it

And that was how he liked to have his teeth pulled out
He told us how he liked to feel it when it came out

He called his dog
But just as he was set to go, his dad arrived there
He yelled at him
Then got some pliers, held him, wound up, and yanked it out right there

That wasn't how he liked to have his teeth pulled out
He wouldn't tell us how it felt when it came out

It's actually quite a good song, but the lyrics aren't written very well there

check out the new album Songs of The Unforgiven then, truly marvellous. It's so dark and melodic that I simply can't get enough of it!

As to your tooth, there'll be emergency appointments tommorrow surely?

Have something on tomorrow morning and whilst I can get an emergency apointment I can't get one at my usual dentist who I'd rather had a look at it - you know what its like

Cheers for the music tip - I shall attempt to acquire it when I next venture out of the house (probably around the 27th with a massive hangover )

or me! Don't think there's much I can do on-line. If the piece of tooth is still attached to the gum then it depends on your pain tolerance. It'll bl00dy hurt to take it out yourself, so I'd recommend seeing the emergency dentist tomorrow for local anaesthetic and remove it then.

The future for that tooth depends on just how far down below the gum level it's broken. If it's significantly down the root, then it's game over. If it's high up then it may be possible to fill or crown, but you may need gum surgery.

Get yourself out of pain, and then start thinking about the options.

It depends.

The fractured portion may ( and it sounds like it is) still be attached to the periodontal ligament. The question is, by how much? If it's very loose the answer is usually not much and a quick tug will remove it. If it's not so loose then removing it could be quite painful without local anaesthetic.

You also run the risk of exposing the "nerve" more if the tooth is vital, which in itself can be more painful.

Best advice is leave it to the profesionals; Temporising the situation is ( or ought to be) fairly straightforward and any qualified person should have no problems making things comfortable until you see your favorite dentist.

Thanks for the advice Wendy and Tony, I shall pop and see the emergency dentist tomorrow - its broken across the tooth with half of it faily mobile but still in the gum. Hurts if I push my tongue against it but otherwise it seems to have calmed down a bit.

On the plus side its one towards back so I won't miss it

And another thing! Get it taken care of right away. Your head is so vascular, that an infection from a tooth injury can lead to some bad problems. Like a blood infection. Last night, my mom, who's a retired RN, was telling me about kids who've had their tongues pierced and gotten infected. The infection can spread straight to their heart and damage a valve, causing a murmur. Same trouble can happen with tooth infections. Good luck and hope you feel better.

Four. Somebody goes by the give-away descriptive of Driller. He's my brother!

Have a look at the profile pic and decide if you'd let him anywhere near your mouth...given the choice I'd be nipping out to the garage for a rummage in my toolbox...!

Hah, ha excellent thread! Can we have our own dentistry forum please Ted?

As Wendy and Tony said, the bit of tooth is bound to be hanging on by just the gum so when you put pressure on it it pulls the fibers holding it on- hence ouch!

Driller

PS Wendy when is that salaried thing coming into play in the Uk?

The new salaried contract is a bucket o' shite, Driller.
IMHO.
