Its bloody cold out and there is no hot festive mulled wine on tap at the Pie and Piston !!.....
So I thought I'd post a recipe ( quite a few of my friends have asked me for it recently )
( Apologies to everyone who already knows all this )
Recipe makes about 3.5 - 4 litres . ( serves 12 )
You need :
One third litre hot water
3 oranges (sliced )
grated orange peel from the oranges
10 heaped tablespoons sugar
4 sticks cinnamon - broken up
1 heaped tablespoon of cloves ( most of a small jar)
2 teaspoons nutmeg
3 litres red wine ( something strong and full bodied c. 14 % is nice )
Heat all the ingredients ( except the wine ! ) - in a pan - simmer it for 20 - 30 minutes - so that all the flavour comes out of the spices into the solution (without the risk of boiling off the alcohol if the wine was added ). Add more water or some orange juice if the liquid boils down too much.
Then add the red wine and slowly warm up to about 70 or 80 deg C ( so the alcohol doesn't boil off ).

Well you make it sound very nice, but I'm sorry - I just can't get on with the stuff!
(I have, however, just discovered perry. Some bloke dropped it round earlier for a good deed I'd done for him. have to say that, considering it's the only booze in the house - it's going down a treat

I've got 9 this year, a new record! Since i on't send them out, its quite impressive!
Try sending some cards - you'll get more back ( and its safer than mailing out glass ornaments in Jiffy bags
