Thought there was a thread on here just yesterday saying Richer Sounds had a 42" one for £999 in at the moment?

Dixons have a Saisho 26" for £699, a Logik 27" for 799 and best of all a 28" Hitachi for £999. Of course if the Plasma is £999 I'd go for that if it isn't too big. Oh just had a look, No Tuner, no Scarts but it does have a composite input so you'd have to get a scart to composite cable.

Just a word of caution - you must actually look at the picture quality of LCD's and Plasma's carefully, as it varies considerably from manufacturer to manufacturer and price to price.

There are three industry grades for LCD screen for instance - low, medium and high. The contrast ratios and movement/refresh ability vary a lot.

I just got my Dad a 27" Sony Wega LCD telly. It cost £1500 (reduced from £1700). Next to a Hitachi costing £1000 the difference was immediate and obvious.

Thanks for the replies so far, can't get anything bigger than 30" as it would be "too big" well according to she who must be obeyed

I agree - I bought a Thomson 27" LCD (£1400ish) with a myraid of connections in Feb this year - it's currently on the guest room bed awaiting collection for repair (QED - steer well clear ).

Due to having impending in & out-laws arriving & no TV, I bought a Panasonic 42" from Richer Sounds ( ). £2K with brackets & tuner - but 1000% better than the LCD. Colour seperation, & immersive environment is WAY WAY better. The plasma was £1500ish without the high-profit addons - I'm sure one could achieve a better price for similar quality.

Or you could spend just under £1600 on a 46" DLP rear projector from Toshiba which batters everything.

If you're planning to wall mount it you may get away with a bigger screen as they tend to look smaller once on the wall. The downside is that you're looking at about anouther £100 for a bracket.

There are no walls to mount it on where all could see it, as I have windows one end of the room and patio doors the other

Bought mine from Webelectricals.co.uk, a 23" Phillips. Can't fault them for price or service. They had a few 26" LCDs for your budget. If you can find one go for the Sharp Aquos range, they've won many awards for picture quality.
When you find a good deal on the web pop down to your local Comet etc to check it out in the flesh before purchasing.
The only problem with most is that Dark colours can often fade blend into one so detailing isn't as crisp.

The best 30" LCD is Sony's KLV30HR3.

Trust me, I'm an oink.

I bought a Philips 30" LCD in the summer - best deal I found was via kelkoo for £1000.00 (incl vat) from a shop in Bolton.

LCD are good, however make sure you get a Widescreen one (80% are not widescreen. Majority of programmes will be widescreen in the next year or two - so I've heard!)

I've had another look on there, but seem more than £1k - ring a few suppliers and tell them you have been offered for £1100.00 and see if they can beat it... and so on
