Finally got round to it. Twenty minutes on Amazon first, a breeze. All the family in the US will have their presents on time and wrapped.

Now I never shop early and I'm not sure I should tell you all this, but town was empty. I drove straight up to the car park with no queueing and there were less people around than on a normal Saturday.

God I love the way everyone else thinks it's going to be hell on earth and stays away. Thank you all

That's not how it works, I'm told.

A management bod from one of the biggest mall thingies said they expected the last week in November to be the busiest time.

And it was.

Hope it works for you. I ordered a load of stuff at the beginning of December from Amazinglywrong and it still hasn't turned up. According to "track your stuff" it's stuck in dispatch, the order can't be cancelled or changed and "may" be delivered anytime up to the 22nd. Useful as we are away from tomorrow night. Useless feckers

I used to do all my Christmas shopping in London on Christmas Eve on the same basis, roads were empty for the drive down from Yorkshire and I could usually get sorted out pretty quickly and easily.

It does demand more than a little brinksmanship though.

Bit early to be worrying about that. Isn't it?

I'll start mine when I finish work. 12 in the afternoon Christmas Eve. I'll be in the pub at half past.

Christmas Eve.

In fact, I'm usually shopping when they're taking the Christmas decorations down and putting up the January sale signs.

You guys have never tried Colchester then.
Signs, in order, and all within a few yards:

'Welcome to Colchester'
'30mph'
'Speed Cameras'
'Parking Enforcement'

It would use less metal to say 'Colchester, Forbidden City, off'.

And when parking offences were decriminalised, the number of wardens went from 2 to 22. They're like ing jackals, almost one per parking space it seems. The sneakiest part is that the free parking is only for 30 minutes - and it's a 10-minute walk from the High Street.
