Big Brother in Schools
Discussion
The obsession mit cameras has sunk to new depths. some time ago I posted a rant about the two-way mirror in a Cumbrian comprehensive school - now according to the Manchester paper - a Salford school has sunk to new depths.
They have installed CCTV cameras in their classrooms. St George's RC High School (11-16) in the Worsley area of Salford has installed such camedras in each classroom of his school. He admits that behaviour ist generally good as this ist leafy area und denies it ist deterrent to bad behaviour
He claims it ist to observe traching methods und exchange ideas on styles of teaching
Und what ist wrong mit staffroom chit chat und personal observations by actual presence in classroom?
He admits that children are self conscious und behave in front of camera
Und are thus more bothered by the intrusion into their privacy that they fail to concentrate und learn!
Bit like us observing speedo in scam area
These cameras are so powerful that they zoom into what the child ist wrtiting!
Und we all know what it feels like to be writing or doing something mit someone watching each and every action
The school has always boasted toppest A-C GCSE results.
So why does this headteacher perceive need to spy on pupils und staff?
He thinks his presence in classroom disturbs childrens's concentration und makes his staff nervous!
I would agree that my own headteacher was one of few peoples who could silence me mit one glance
but I was taught by my headteacher for some of my lessons too und did not find his presence to distract me that much - nor can I remember any one of my teachers getting un-nerved by his majestic presence
Salford's Education Councillor (Keith Mann - an echt pillock who ist a pro-scammer und supporter of speed humps in area according to previous reports in this local paper) believes the idea to be a valuable tool und wants to extend this to other schools in the Salford area
The twazak Headteacher who appears to have as much common sense as a half baked pretzel says:
"I look forward to the day when pre-recorded lessons could replace teachers
und children will behave in front of camera!"
Indeed! Has he no hear of the OU which have pre-recorded lectures
Und as for his comment about kids behaving for hidden camera - I take it he never watched that awful C4 series "Big Brother" which proved the opposite after they got used to camera und I know that my own kittens act up for the camcorder!
What a plank!
What does the PH community think of this idea? Would they like their kids to be watched like this und something constantly looking over their shoulder to check on what they are writing?
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Subtle hint to my husband - no cameras for Christmas - I want my sexy car!

I don't necessarily agree that this is a good idea in all classrooms - some maybe.
Playing devils advocate, one of the problems schools face is proving how disruptive some children are to their parents and other authorities. The word of a professional is often not enough in these "PC" times.
If a camera has a quietening effect on disruptive children then it might not necessarily be a bad thing in some cases.
I would welcome the option to have CCTV in my classroom, as long as I could decide when to switch it on and off.
Too many kids are claiming outrageous things against teachers.
It would be great to know that when my crappy year 10 were on their way I could switch it on and then show their parents how their little "Angels" actually behaved.
Its not the CCTV that's the problem, its who controls it.

Not really related to disruptive behaviour but still relavent, everytime I walk past my old schools (primary and secondary) there seems to be more security measures.
At my primary now you can't see anything from outside as there is a 15ft high 'Anti Paedo' fence made from steel bars in such a way that you can't see past them, to get in you first of all have to get past another huge gate with keypad entry. Then there's the walk through the playground, cameras watching every move. You then have to buzz the bell and someone has to let you in. My old secondary school is even worse and everyone in the sixth form must have a photo ID card around their neck at all times (which double up as swipe card entry as well)
Both schools now look like concentration camps.
When I was a child I don't recall any of these security measures being required, it wasn't that long ago and I'm sure things haven't changed that much (though of course perception has shifted)
At a cost of many thousands per school we are creating a paranoid generation who will be so conditioned with these security measures they will take anything in the name of 'safety'
