Hope the film isn't a travesty.

I wonder how good the film will actually be.

I'm a fan of the books/radio series, less so of the TV series.

I'll definitely be going to see it though, just to make my own mind up.

Apart from the loss of around half of the two books it was based upon (HHGTTG and TRATEOTU) and the BBC's rather limited second head special effects dept (probably made by Biddy Baxter) the series was a fairly literal copy of the books.

I'm sure Hollywood can f@*k it up! What? A happy ending or maybe intertwining a useless love story - as per 'Sum of All Fears'?

Not much scope for gunplay either, except the cops who care too much

Truthfully the only way themovie would ever get made was if he died and then they could get on with it.

Hopefully they wont mess it up, but knowing hollywood it'll be some yank centric flick where Will Smith kicks vogon ass.

We've discussed this before, and some kind PHer posted a link to an interview with guy writing the screenplay for this film. Basically he is "one of us" and this film has some very positive indications that it will be a faithful and accurate adaptation.

Which is encouraging.

Compare this with "I, Robot" which I have so far refused to watch as I have read too much about it being a travesty of Asimov's work. Apparantly they have connected a small generator up to his corpse which, as it spins in its grave, is currently providing electricity to a small town.
