Training Contract advice please
Discussion
I saw the lawyer thread and it reminded me.
Not for me but for my girlfriend.
She is halfway through her PgDipL and is virtually guaranteed a place at the College of Law for her LPC.
Problem is that she is having trouble getting as far as interviews for a TC.
She seems to be well qualified, bilingual in Italian/English, Italian Law degree from Pisa University, etc. She has a few work placements lined up and is interested in Criminal or EU (completely different I know).
Can anyone offer advice on doing the application forms. Any particular things that you are looking for?
I know it's a bit cheeky asking but I have to live with her and she is driving me nuts at times with CVs' and applications.
Cheers

Pah, you mean she hasn't even saved children with cancer and no limbs from a burning house in Cambodia whilst preparing a presentation to the UN? Only two fluent languages? And who the hell speaks Italian - surely Latin or Szechuan would have been more useful? Only one degree, and in Law of all things?
...doesn't stand a chance
She has been targeting criminal firms recently cause the larger EU ones don't have deadlines for at least a few months.
Main problem is that she missed the 2 year deadline because she didn't get her foreign degree approved by the Law Society till about two weeks before the deadlines passed. So she has two choices I guess. Get a TC with one of the firms that only have one year queues or go for the bigger ones and spend a year working as a paralegal or something like that.

Pardon my earlier scepticism, and it was meant largely toungue-in-cheek. Getting paralegal experience would be very useful in any event and would only support future tc applications (particularly to that firm ). Some of the med-larger firms may advertise "last-minute" tc's on their website for a year in advance e/g where they have had candidates pull out or find extra capacity.
That said, for any half decent firm it's very very hard these days, tenacity is a pre-requisite. Best of luck to her.

Not so much the application thing but without Law Society approval she would not be accepted on the course. They only got back to her about two weeks before the course started and about one week before the course leader was going to say too late.
Not spin, just fact. Most deadlines for the biggies were end of July with interviews in August/early September. As she didn't have a place till beginning of September it doesn't look very good going into an interview saying 'I might have a place on a course but don't know yet'.

Sorry, realised it was tongue in cheek, just been a rough day.

And.. like I said, this was before the PGDipL. One of the requirements of the course was that she had a certificate from the law society saying her degree allowed her to be accepted on the course. She is on that course just now. The LPC is not an issue, she fully expects to get the place she wants. The PGDipL for her is equivalent to someone like me deciding I want to become a lawer. I wouldn't have to do another 3 year degree, only 1 year.
As I am not a lawyer I don't know how you guys think.
As she is Italian, living there until a year ago, she knows how the Italian system works but the British system is a lot different, not just legally but culturally.
Somebody who takes on moving country, deciding to spend another two years at uni and the financial cost of the courses is surely showing plenty of motivation for the career she wants.
I simply posted asking what seems to be a large presence of legal people here if they have any useful advice as I'm certain they have all been through this themselves. What I didn't expect was something akin to saying she may aswell give up if she can't sort out something in a week.

Ah well, no point arguing about it!!!
Reading the other thread it sounds like you are very busy at the moment so I'll thank you for your time and let you get on with trying to finish up in time for Christmas.
(And no I'm not being sensitive, just don't see the point in fighting over a word here or there).
