This is not some variation on the Daily Mail societal collapse expose theme, merely, a reaction to yet another news item attempting to ascertain the extent of this phenomenon.

Is it really the case that 25%-ish of 'young people' indulge in this largely weekend orientated debauchery?

If it is, then I suspect there is something fundamentally wrong with the mindset of Albion's trapped rats.

Worryingly, this type of prepubescent behaviour would seem to transcend socio-economic boundaries and seemingly, affect the females to a greater degree than the male apes groping after them (or fighting each other).

It's not so much the issue of people 'having a good time' (although Christ only knows what is at all comendable in frolicking around with virtual primates, dancing through pools of uriah and collapsing contendedly amidst freshly laid mounds of vomit), rather, the en masse nature of these urbanite gatherings.

Of course, the towns and cities have for decades seen a gathering momentum of bombastic youth antisocialism but there would appear to be nowhere free of this yobbish, shirt hanging out, earring proud rump of pointless grunters.

This means that few places can escape the almost hallucinatory assault of the over imbibed masses.

Perhaps these social ticks are simply too damn comfortable, so that effectively sh1tting in their own 'back yard,' as it were, is unrecognised as the wholly unnacceptable behaviour it so manifestly is? Perhaps if these people had suffered true deprivation, felt the cold hand of war or famine, their appalling antics might otherwise be constrained or moderated?

So it's the extent of this thing, rather than it's existence per se which is at issue.

It's always gone on. When I was a mere lad of 18 (1978 ) it was perfectly normal for us blokes to go out and have 8 or 10 pints of an evening. The difference today is that large city centres have many many times the number of pubs and clubs in close proximity which serve to exaserpate the problem. If you get 5000 pissed young people on the streets of say Nottingham at the say time there is bound to be some aggro and the Mail, Trevor McDonald etc.. can send camera crews along knowing they'll get a story.

"Binge drinking" is just a modern term for going out on the piss, which has been happening since the dark ages. I do seem to recall that the women drank less in my day though. They also wore more clothes IIRC.

I grew up in Cardiff.

During my drinking youth you would see quite a few lads/ladettes out on the lash but nothing over the top. The Philharmonic was about the busiest place in town.

A few weeks back I visited my mother and we went out for a meal on St Mary Street.

I have honestly never seen anything like it, there sheer scale of the number of 15-25 year olds on the lash was quite astounding.

Town planners - it may be easier to Police if all the bars are in the same place, but its a recipe for disaster long term...

I like binge drinking, it's a tradition in this part of the country. I'll keep on doing it even if they ban it

We are fortunate that we have in this country at least lived in a relativly peaceful and stable time for a good few years. In days gone by, the "yoof" would be off exploring foreign parts and claiming them for the empire, fighting wars and subjugating the natives etc. Today, the world is a much smaller place and most things have been done.

I don't condone their behaviour, far from it, but what else do they have to do of a Friday night?

The trapped rats of today differ from their ancestors. The minimum wage monkey of today who spends the majority of his budget on WKD, "power shandies" and aftershocks every weekend has a lot more resentment. Mass communication has given jonny no-stars and his friends an inkling into the opportunities that they are not only missing but will never have the wherewithal to make the most of. They suspect that the world has a lot more to offer and they also suspect that it is not on offer to them. The few pleasures they have is getting pissed, eating a kebab and fighting. For reference material see Booze Britain on Bravo, a finer piece of documentary television has never been made

Is binge drinking the problem or is it the number of piss-heads that is the problem.

Considering this country is dominated by high strength beers and lagers and alco pops is it any wonder there are so many piss-heads about.

Drop the alcohol content, people can drink the same amount but not get so drunk they cant see, walk, remember what they did. Binge drinking wouldnt be a problem then would it.

Other solution would be to introduce 24 hour drinking so people dont drink to a time limit...
