I saw a program about base jumpers and these two guy's had climbed a chimney inorder to leap off the top.

They were sitting on the chimney ledge and all I could think of was what if they fell down the chimney itself - no parachute will work in there and Santa would have been jealous.

If it was the programme I saw, it was at Claydon, Suffolk (chimney no longer used at time of jump – gone now).

How much do I want a go at that!! Looks like excellent fun. Got to love throwing the drouge out behind you as you jump! Now so keen on jumping on traffic though but some of those mountains were truely awesome.

Something really appealing about that, quite fancy trying "normal" parachuting out of a plane one day!

Why is it every time I watch a programme about base jumpers, it's always dedicated "in memorium" to one of the jumpers featured in the programme?

Done a few big bungy jumps, so don't have any concern about jumping off things from a long way up - have often wondered whether I'd have the guts to go a BASE jump, as it seems like the next (il)logical step. Usually the answer is a resounding "NO!", but if it was all legit (eg the Royal Gorge bridge in Colorado) and using a static line or something, well.....maybe.

Word of warning... from what I understand BASE jumping is very dangerous (compared to parachuting)... especially off buildings because the air currents can suck you towards the building!

I think that's the one. If I remember correctly, I think they did the jump as a final tribute before it fell.

Hmmmmm jump off high buildings/mountains, relying on a piece of nylon to get you back to terra firma? er... whats wrong with steps ladders and stairs?

Who in thier right mind would voluntarily jump out of a perfectly good Aeroplane and rely on a piece of nylon strapped to thier back?

Base jumpers stride beyond the physical confidence of most sane mortals.

I would not claim for an instant to have been anywhere near where those lunatics go, but since my first timid step out of a plane I'd happily recommend to anyone who gets a thrill out of speed, exposure, or any form of calculated risk that they try free fall parachuting. It's like blending the view from a mountain summit with the instant before you pass the breaking point into a corner.

No way in hell. Skydiving sure, but there is no way you're gonna get me to throw myself off a cliff or building. Thats just too much. Something disturbing, yet facinating about the bit where the two guys have their mate by the hands and feet and just pitch him off the edge.

Not only that, but you have so little time to attempt to correct the situation if something were to go wrong.

Must admit to quite liking the look of some of the mountain jumps. Surely thats as good as jumping out of a plane? They are extremely high up.

And you have to love those suits they wear with wings!

Okay so who's up for it? Seriously if you want to do a parachute jump (I have for years) I'll look into it. Safety in numbers?

Now if you're talking sky surfing That looks like the ultimate thrill ride.

Wow, what a rush that must be. If I was going to use a parachute to be silly, that would have to be it for me!

Oh I heard of 6 BASE jumpers who went off El Capitan (3500ft cliff in Yosemite Valley). They'd underestimated the wind effects and 3 of them died
