Cliff helps to clear pubs

Landlords have found the best way to get rid of drinkers at closing time at Christmas is to play a Cliff Richard song.

Pub bosses watched the reaction of customers to festive tunes and it was 64-year-old Cliff singing his 1988 No1 hit Mistletoe And Wine who cleared bars the fastest.

The carol Silent Night, Aled Jones' Walking in the Air and Elvis' Blue Christmas were also a turn-off for drinkers.

A spokesman for John Barras pubs said: "Christmas wouldn't be complete without Cliff but he certainly gets customers to drink up."

What other songs would have you drinking up and getting the hell out of there?

For me it would have to be anything by Craig David

Anything by Des O'Connor...my dad used to like his stuff..I never fully recovered.

The Spice Girls, S Club 7, Steps, B*Witched, Spiller, any Ibiza rubbish, Cliff Richard, Phil Collins (non-Genesis), Radiohead, Tiffany, 'Hits of the '70s/'80s/'90s' CDs...

There's quite a bit that I don't like, TBH.

In my day the DJ always used to play New York, New York at kicking out time. Problem was it had the oppsite effect!! Loads of pissed up blokes, arms round each other in a large circle doing high kicks then falling over each other in a heap.

Oh, those were the days!!

Sugababes. Espeacially 'Caught In The Middle'. I'd probably run without finishing the drink. (If I were old enough to drink in the first place )

Slightly off topic but the thread was called kicking out time:

11 o'clock. That's a sensible time for ending you nights drinking isn't it

We only have to look at our European counterparts and their licensing laws. Most places are 24hours or at the licencee's disgretion.

Who has the biggest alchahol problem and the most registered alchaholics in Europe? We do. What is the definition of an alchaholic? A binge drinker.

I think its about time pubs opened their doors 24/7 over here so people would learn to respect their drinks and take their time with their pints rather than trying to rush another few rounds in before 'the bell'.

Rapidly approaching the BIG 40 I would like to have the right to say to myself I will stay in the pub drinking till morning

In my local they turn the sounds and gas fires off at 11 and open the doors at either end of the bar - brrr.. - gets the punters shivering and moving without too much hassle.........

but 11 is too early on a Friday and Saturday for the law to tell us its time to go home.

For all the moaning that goes on it is easy to forget that Drinking hours are going to be reformed by the progressive government we have at the moment.

When? Just before the election, no doubt.
