Crikey.

This is one of those stories where you suspect that you'll never know the half of it....

There's a lot more to this than we'll ever here about.

Well of course the Ukraine is pretty important strategically as it has deep harbours which are sheltered.

For years the pride of the Russian navy was based there. If the place falls into the influence of western Europe then Russia would have to move their navy elsewhere and they would lose the all-weather shelter they have there...

Couple this with the fact that Russia is already smarting at the arrival of nato warplanes in Lithuania and their pride is somewhat battered.

Putin has always wanted the incumbent to win because it meant that a sympathetic country was between their borders and the EU. If he loses and Ukraine becomes "westernised" then he'll have the EU right in his backyard.

So my money is on the Russians trying to nobble Yuschenko.

Well to be fair he must have been at least 136 years old. He looked it anyway.

His wife said she tasted the poisen on his lips and realised he had been poisened immediately. They must know which meal it was, and who prepared it. Scientists said it would have to have been a very strong tasting meal to hide the amount of Dioxins in his system...
