I’ve promised my family that I’d take them on a cruise for a week or two in the summer. I’ve been on a few with the wife, but I’ve never been on one with kids.

These are my requirements, if anyone has got any suggestions:

1) Good for families – I’ve got four kids ranging in age from 6 to 14.

2) Not too formal – we don’t want to be all togged up in jacket and ties.

3) We’d like to go on the Mediterranean, where it is warm and isn’t too much ‘swell’.

4) A decent boat with lots of amenities.

So far we’ve been recommended “Ocean Village”, but the rooms look a little poky to me, and the whole ship looked a little ‘cheesy’ in the brochure and on the web.

Any ideas would be most welcome!

Put the kids in kennels and take the missus somewhere special. Indian ocean? Caribbean?

I think they would love a Mediterranean cruise, my kids did.......

However, I would advise you to try a fly/cruise package, picking the ship up somewhere like Malaga, because if you sail from England you waste nearly a week getting there and back, the weather is st and the Bay of Biscay can be very rough.......

The Guildford Cruise attacts a lot of families. I guess it's down to the lack of laxpower cars and majority of cars being large american V8s...

I've been on a number of cruises - and thoroughly enjoyed every one.

Some boats are very kid friendly with activity centres, games, competitions etc.

I suggest a Med cruise for starters - and go for one that takes in Pompeii, Pisa, Meteora, and places that will make your kids go "wow!"

I prefer the small to medium size ships as they ar more personal and you can walk around them easily.

There is a beautiful sailing cruise liner called the Windstar:

We went on the "Ocean Village" cruises the Med in Summer and move to the Bahamas in winter. No formal dinner requirements 11-year old went off with his mates to the club and even fed himself! 8 year old girl we had to pick up at midday and early evening.

Thanks Alex - I seriously like the look of that. As always, it'll all come down to the missus, followed by the kids, follwed by me!
