As a spin off from another post elsewhere on here I have a question for anyone in the “shares” game.
I know someone who has some shares in Eurotunnel they don’t want, they have had them for years, say before 1987. One of the perks of these shares (if you have more than 1500) is that you can cross for next to nothing when you want.
I know I could come to some financial arrangement with the owner. My question is this:
Is there any way of transferring/selling/giving them to me in such a way that the crossing free perk is not lost?
I know the person who has them well enough to do this in ANY WAY necessary but we are not related (if that matters).

Any ideas anyone?

You would need to check the paperwork to see if the travel benefit would be lost of the shares are sold or transferred.

The free crossing perk has to be worth more than the capital value of theshares

Can I transfer my shares, with travel privileges ?

The right to travel privileges is personal and non-transferable. A transfer of shares therefore results in the loss of travel privileges (except in the case of the death of the first named unitholder, when the shares and travel privileges may be transferred to the surviving unitholder)

What if there is only one shareholder and I became a joint shareholder?

Does'nt quite work like that, a joint shareholder will own some of the shares, not parts of individual shares.

I am sure smarter people than me have already looked at doing this.
Even if there is a way they probably would not go round shouting about it.

I think you will also find that you are only entitled to ONE free crossing per year. Friends of mine in France have shares and that was all they got. I think it was only for the first ten years as well IIRC.

The perk may simply be connected to a minimum shareholding - Debenhams and many other places do similar things (my uncle specialised in buying shares in companies he used a lot for that reason!).

I don't know if you can write to the company and ask themn to change the name of the holder...? That would save commissions, bid/offer spreads etc.

See link above, 1500+ shares, pre 1987 free travel valid until 2086!

There has to be a way but probably not through the front door. One of those situations that someone knows how, but it isn't me

Change your name to that of the bloke who owns the shares.

Actually transferring the shares is easy and can be done for the price of a stamp. Complete a stock transfer form (see www.shareview.co.uk/download/stockform.pdf) and send it with the share certificate to the company's registrar (address on Eurotunnel site).

It looks like only the basic 30% discount / 3 trips pa 'perk' is transferable. The only downside is the new owner has to hold the shares for 3 months before qualifying for the discounts.

The better freebies are non-transferable as other posters have mentioned.
