Political definitions
Discussion
I thought these might be useful for the people that define everything non-Conservative as "left"...
Socialism - definition
Economic system which is based on cooperation rather than competition and which utilizes centralized planning and distribution. The set of beliefs which states that all people are equal and should share equally in the wealth of the country, or the political systems based on these beliefs.
Liberalism - definition
(of a political party or a country) believing in or allowing more personal freedom and a development towards a fairer sharing of wealth and power within society. The word has a number of meanings, all of which reflect aspects of liberal thought. These include "favorable to progress and reform, as in religious or political affairs"; "favorable to or in accord with concepts of maximum individual freedom possible, esp. as guaranteed by law and secured by governmental protection of civil liberties"; "open-minded or tolerant, esp. free of or not bound by traditional or conventional ideas, values, etc."; and "characterized by generosity and willingness to give in large amounts".
Hippy - definition
A person, typically young, especially in the late 1960s and early 1970s, who believed in peace, was opposed to many of the accepted ideas about how to live. A person who opposes and rejects many of the conventional standards and customs of society, especially one who advocates extreme liberalism in sociopolitical attitudes and lifestyles.
Now, I believe that those irritating terms "lentilist" and "sandalist" so beloeved of PH-ers refer to the latter two definitions and not the former.

New Labour Socialism - definition
Economic system which is reliant on traditional capitalist competition and which utilizes centralized planning of wealth stripping from the capitalist sector and distribution to the non-working socialist sector. The set of beliefs which states that all socialists are equal and should share equally in the wealth of the capitalist wealth generators, or the political systems based on these beliefs.
UK Liberal Democrat Liberalism - definition
(of a political party or a country) believing in the restriction of personal freedom where that personal freedom does not comply with current ideological thought (motoring for instance) and a development towards a stripping of wealth from the capitalist wealth generating sector to distribute to the non-working liberal sector. The word has a number of meanings, all of which reflect aspects of liberal thought. These include "favorable to progress and reform, that provides benefit to the liberal supporter at the expense of those that are guilty of believing otherwise"; "favorable to or in accord with concepts of maximum individual freedom possible within a strict framework of ideologically based guidelines, esp. as guaranteed by law and secured by governmental approved civil liberties"; "open-minded or tolerant when considereding that which sits within the ideological box, esp. free of or not bound by traditional or conventional ideas, values, particularly adverse to those that actually work and provide benefit to society"; and "characterized by generosity and willingness to give in large amounts to the undeserved by taking from the worker".

On the contrary I'd probably have more in common with the middle definition than the other two (the third is pretty irrelevant unless you fiddle with animals for a living). However, in today's bastardisation of liberalism it represents more of what used to be called socialism. The definition you give of socialism on the other hand sounds a fairly extreme form of the ideology, more approaching communism.

Sorry, can't agree with you there
Socialism A system of running a country (note NOT economic) where useless incompetent wnakers are appointed by ignorant chavs to ensure envy taxes are raised to pay for their wastrel existance from the hardworking honest law-abiding majority. Also infested with PCism and other incompetencies! Socio-fascist ministers rewrite all the basic rights of the majority to ensure that the majority can't or won't ever rebel against their repulsive rule.
There seems to be a widespread belief that any governmental policy that is in someway detrimental to ones own income/standard of living could only be born out of some kind of envy. To me that seems a little short sighted
Socialism for me means a belief in Society and an acknowledgement that we are all a part of a society, and can only prosper in the long term as a society. Members of a society have to support each other or the whole system breaks down.
or something

No man is an island, entire of itself
every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main
if a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were,
as well as if a manor of thy friends or of thine own were
any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind
and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls
it tolls for thee.
or something
I think socialism and capitalism both share the idea that everyone should get what they deserve, it's just they have different definitions of who deserves what. I go for the latter myself - you get what you work for. Problem is there are a lot of plebs with a vote who think that if you're wealthy, you're not working for it. Also we have gone beyond the situation where we contribute a fair amount to help those who need help to where we contribute in punitive amounts to support the terminally can't-be-arsed.
I also think socialism is dogged by closet communists who see it as a more media-friendly moniker. It worked for Hitler after all...
