One for the Ph medico's again...

My daughter has stomach pains. I think it's genuine as she was wincing rather than griping. The pain is to the left side, roughly in line with her navel and in line with the edge of her abs. No temperature, no D&V no excessive tenderness.

I have avoided giving her Calpol as I was under the impression Paracetamol based products are not good for an upset stomach. I do have some childrens Ibuprofen in the house, but I'm saving that in case I need it later.

I have got her to sleep now, but what's best to relieve the pain/symptoms should she kick off... You just know if anything happens, it will be at 3AM

Is there anything I should be looking out for?

From experience apendicitis has you doubled over although it could be grumbling.

Perhaps a hot watter bottle is the best bet at this stage and perhaps a phone call to nhs direct.

I'll ask the wife in a minute, she'll know whats best.

As a child I would get this sometimes when playing on the floor with toys after a full meal. My insides would get compressed or something... could that be it?

Left sided means it's unlikely to be appendix, but the left side of the abdomen could mean a number of things. There are a few things that need to be established, firstly, how old is she? How long has she had the pains? Has she ever had any other medical problems?

The origin of the pain could be as benign as gastroenteritis, but then it could be an intestinal problem or even gynaecological...... If the pain gets worse, you might want to consider calling your GP.....

Calpol is ok, no problem in Gastrointestinal issues, in fact ibuprofen is probably much worse, given that it can cause ulcers.... so go ahead, give her some calpol.

Could be.... Or it could be nothing. Put it down to growing pains or whatever my parents called it when I was little.

It's not about good parenting, it's about ensuring I can get some sleep tonight

Thanks 968. She's almost 7. No other conditions apart from petit mal seizures, which are fully controlled with Epilim (2X5ml daily) which she has been taking about 6 months. She has a check up for this in January.

She has only had the pain for an hour or so at bbedtime. Calpol and a hot water bottle I think are in oorder!

It's probably stage fright like MikeyT says, it was the school carol concert today... could just be nerves.

MikeyT... Prepare to go aah

OK, it could well be just anxiety, but if there's any sign of fever, or increase in the pain, let us know about it..... if you press the tummy, if its very tender to touch, thats a sign you need to see a doctor... I don't think that the epilim is related to this....

There's no polite way of putting this but it could be trapped wind which can be extremely painful! A hot water bottle will help ease the discomfort.

Certainly is! Another way to shift it is a drink of VERY hot water: it expands the air until you - uh - throw it up. Momentary agony then you're fine

There has been a really nasty bug going round here so I've been waiting for one of mine to pick it up. The pavement outside our local school is littered with small piles of sick at the moment - very pleasant.

My 4 yr old started grumbling about his tummy hurting when I dropped him off at the creche at the gym, but he was fine when I picked him up, he very proudly told me that he'd done a "massive poo" for the lady. So pleased !

Hope you're little girl is ok.

thread steeling sorry!
Sorry to steal the thread, but on that note I have a skin condition that could do with sorting. I have been fobbed off by my doctor for two years on every treatment you can think of, and despite having private medical insurance they have refused to refer me until now. But I still would not mind some advice. Basically I have severe skin blistering and rash behind my left knee. It won’t go or shift. The only time it shifted was when they dosed me up with steroids for 7 days. I also get horrible blotches on my face which looks like terrible skin burning and sometimes it peels behind my ears (sorry about this folks). Also it used to occur at my elbow joint on my left side as well but the steriods actually cured that!

I am ambidextrous but have chosen to write with my right hand although my left leg is stronger for kicking rugby balls etc.

Thanks in advance if anyone can help.

It's difficult to diagnose a rash without actually seeing it..... the fact that it does improve on steroids doesn't necessarily narrow it down, but it could suggest that it is inflammatory in it's aetiology, perhaps it's an allergic phonomenon, or maybe it's something like eczema, which would go with a rash on a flexor surface, like the back of the knee..... then again, a rash on an extensor surface, like the elbow could be psoriasis.......

Of course you can see a Dermatologist privately, and pay out of your own pocket, but then again, I don't know why the GP doesnt just refer you privately?

Well he finally has agreed to the referal, because I said to him 2 years was 23 months too long and its not exactly costing him! I think he liked the idea that he could try out about 20 different medications on me and see what worked! Very frustrating! I do travel a lot ie spend huge amounts of times on planes and I only have half a stomach (half was removed), so dont know if its related, so I am meant to get 30 minutes sun exposure a day for one of the vitamins I am short of...

Sorry I just got excited someone would know it just like that! I was thinking stress related, but i doubt it. It itches like mad and looks like a burn.

Could it be exema ? I used to get it behind my knees and in my elbows, but I knew people who used to get it all all over.

It used to be cured by creams which contained steroids but the only lasting remedy was going to a Chinese Doctor who game we foul tasting teas and little black pills.

Well it appear that not only am I too late in answering but that I can't spell either.
