A girl who works for me owns one of the cars. Its totally written off yet apparently the driver was not speeding.
Is that right?
She's got some pictures on her camera, I'll post them once she brings them in.
CRASH, BANG, WALLOP
BY VERONICA LORRAINE
15:55 - 06 December 2004
Astring of parked vehicles has been left extensively damaged after a police van collided into them while on routine patrol earlier today.
Residents from Wolfa Street, Derby, said they heard loud bangs at 1.25am and, when they looked out of their window, they saw a police transit van had collided with at least seven cars.
A Derbyshire police spokesman confirmed that the officer was on routine patrol and an investigation had been launched.
Resident Rob White (27) was due to drive to Scotland today in his JCB company car, but when he walked out onto the street this morning he saw his car had been shunted up onto the pavement and written off completely.
He said: "My car was third in a line of shunted cars. It must have been hit with some force as it had gone into the car behind mine, which had gone into three other cars behind that. I would say a lot of the cars will have to be written off.
"I'm not so bothered, as mine is a company car, but there were some very annoyed residents as it's such a frustrating and time-wasting thing to have happened.
"It's a narrow street, but I've seen delivery lorries come up here with no problems."
Mike Medgyesy, of Wolfa Street, said: "I heard these great bangs at around 1.30am and looked outside.
"I was first on the scene and saw the policeman getting out of his van, so I went up to him to ask if he was alright as he looked very pale and shaken.
"I asked him what had happened and he said he had bumped a few cars on the way down the road.
"It seems he had collided with a few cars which shunted into a group of about five cars, which has caused the most serious damage."
Another Wolfa Street resident, who did not want to be named, added: "The streets are very narrow but the bin men manage to get down here every week with their lorry, so it can be done."
A police spokesman said: "The police officer was on a routine patrol in a white Mercedes transit van.
"There were no injuries but a number of cars were involved.
"The van was travelling along Wolfa Street towards Abbey Street when it collided with vehicles parked on the nearside. As a result, all of these vehicles received damage, some extensively."
He added: "The Road Policing Unit is looking at it as if it was a normal accident - it is investigating it in the same way it would any accident."
He said a Peugeot 106, Volkswagen Golf, Proton, Vauxhall Vectra, Vauxhall Corsa, Nissan Micra and Rover Metro were involved in the collision.

I'd have thought a JCB would be able to handle a police van without much damage

Do Police vehicles have GPS scanners on them to locate them at all times, like the ones that some hauliers use?
If not, why not?
In a case such as this it would be clear cut and there would be no funny business...
This is Derbyshire Police we're talking about Matt, not exactly bastions of truth and impartiality.

I read that and thought exactly the same thing.
But I have a feeling he meant Mercedes PANEL van, just like people call every mechanical digger a JCB, and all Personal Stereos and Personal CD players are Walkmans and Discmans
I would say he either fallen asleep, not a hard thing to do at 1.30 on a nightshift, or hes given it a good bootfull and has lost it good and proper.
But even then, 7 cars?!?! He must have hit the first 3 or 4, then reversed back and then hit the rest.
I can understand mullering 7 cars if your driving a heavy, but a van?
