I am looking for a new cinema system and need some recommendations with the budget being around the £1500 - £2000 mark. It must look good and perform well, be a CRT TV probabl 32" and not have plasticy looking speakers. I have been toying with two solutions so far:

(Sorry I can't remember any part numbers at the moment)

1) Sony TV and cinema system plus chucking the standard speakers for Wharfedales (~£600).

2) Philips TV and Denon cinema system with the wood/ally speakers.

Any ideas of better kit for the budget??

TIA

Nik

If you're wanting advice on this sort of kit, pay a visit to this site www.avforums.com/.
There is a lot of info on there and some some real TV techies and independent retaillers contribute to the forums on line who are only too happy to answer your questions.

It's ridiculous just how good, subjectively, a 32" JVC 50Hz TV can be for less than a monkey, honest, Guv.

Leaves you around a bag of sand for some mega value electronics & speaker variants.

Here's fun: Yamaha's all conquering DSP-AX750SE AV amplifier with the venerable KEF KHT2005.2 'egg' speakers or Bose Acoustimass AM6, 10 or 15s for more or less the definitive, 'domestically acceptable' sub-sat incarnation for roughly the balance of the budget.

In the alternative, if you like the idea of Vikings, the rule of Pendragon and The Ace of Spades as our national anthem, then check out the less subtle but even warmer charms of the Acoustic Energy Evo 3B speaker system: aethetically, a triumphant faux pas in these days of contemporary minimalism but James Earl Jones never sounded so good.

Heads down for a jot of speed metal, what?

Good tigh!

Der,

Quick question for you.

Our present TV is currently on its way out. So i'm currently on the look out for a new widescreen.

What would you recommend - Needs to be 28" wide and not be too deep. Also need 3 scart sockets.

I did find a 28" JVC in Currys at the weekend for £300 at Currys which seemed to fit the bill. (Not too deep with a nice flat screen)

Any suggestions?

Here's another question for the venerable derestrictor:

How much should one pay for a 42" system?

Phil, the JVC's are incredibly good value although you probably only need 2 scarts (vcr best looping through your Sky/Freeview/cable box via scart) and any games apps connecting via the front/side a/v connectors.

If you can stretch to the Philips 28PW9309 pixel plus set the clarity & sheer brilliance of the image will bowl you over.

Don, are you talking about a set alone or something more?

I would second this, got the DSP AX750SE with Mordaunt short Genie speakers, and it is proverbially speaking, the mutts nuts...

When you come to buy, I (and other PHers) can highly recommend www.soundandvisiononline.com/ ... the best prices around IMO, and they went out of their way to deliver on a day that suited me. Well impressed

Probably just the set/stand. I have a stereo system I'd want to send the sound to - not bothered about surround sound particularly.

You should be!
Having spent years listening to DVDs played through the Liza, to finally have a separates based 6.1 system was an utter revelation.

I'll admit, mine is a bit of a compromise to both music and movies. But it means that the movie soundtrack sounds superb, and the music isn't half bad either.

If you can subtly add a surround component Don, I'd highly recommend it.

Interesting - looking to get an LCD screen (less than 32 inch as it would probably drown my front room - currently have a cracker of a Panasonic 28") at the moment. Been to a few specialist places and the quality does vary considerably between manufacturers - some that they had on sale for example had very poor viewing angles!

However, is it me, or have the prices come tumbling down? 6 months ago it was £2000+ for a 28"+ screen. Now we are talking £1200 for a pretty good one. I had it suggested to me that retailers are trying to keep prices high for christmas to drop them for the Jan sales - any truth in this, or am I just being a tight-wad?

Anyway, looking for comments or feedback about Tiny or Relisys screens. Seem REALLY cheap but deeply sceptical - Tiny have no track record and Relisys just seem tooo cheap.... would I be better looking for something like Panasonic, JVC or Philips?

P.S. Went to the Sony store in London the other week. A TV for £15,000?????? Your having a laugh right? Display was crap - but then again it was showing broadcast BBC TV so it wouldnt be brilliant anyway.

Don,

I know you're into your music, and I'm guessing you have a fairly top notch stereo system

Add a centre and a pair of rear speakers and spend a bit of time setting up the amp

Get down to a local hifi shop for a demo these little buggers are particularly nice (may or may not go with your existing set up)

Guess it depends if Dons current amp will support a 5.1 output, Ben.

Assuming the DVD has onboard decoders then not a problem.
