Watched it last night and was enjoying it up to the point where Richard (DiCaprio) went all Apocalypse Now, started creeping about making funny noises and generally behaving like a monkey or was it a cat? He then just as quickly turned normal again after becoming quite clearly a fruitcake.

What's that all about then?

Spoilt a good film up to that point for me.

Did I miss that bit then? I just thought he'd gone fruitloop, because he was cast asunder, by "Sal" the vicious earth woman.

Had he been smoking de 'erb?

a prime example of the book being sooo much better than the film. One of my favourite books, and least favourite films.

Completely agree! The casting of Richard was the worst ever - I was so disappointed with the film ... although I did watch it again last night.

For those with poor geography, Koh Phi Phi is in South Thailand. The production company promised not to bespoil the pristine grass beach then proceeded to take it apart. They removed all the scrub grass and bush to make it look like a plain sandy beach. It was a short slope to the water so they imported more sand to elongate it back promising to reinstate everything as before. (How they expected to reinstate shrubs is a mystery.) The Thai people objected - it's staggeringly beautiful but poor region - but were ignored for the greater good of Hollywood box office receipts.

I have been there diving 2 times 1st just before the movie came out 2nd time about 1 year after its release .

The main problem is the amount of tourists who come to see it have made the bay unbearable , way too many long tail boats tearing through , ferry boats make a detour there , it is total chaos im not sure how many are injured or killed there every year but it must be many .

Before the film it was neglected old fisher mans waste nets and such like were dumped there and it was a mess .

Spent the Millenium new year there at a beach party which ended up very

Still thats progress for you
