Well, whilst in my final year at university I decided to join the royal navy as an officer. I took the test and passed, and since I graduated I have been working for my mum waiting to hear whether or not I had been selected for January's training. Sadly I have not and it is unlikely that I will be picked at all before the May deadline, at which point I will have to re-sit the test, something I am not really willing to do frankly. I have a place at Guilford College of Law, which I defered from this year to next year, so I guess it's off to there for me!! Bloody navy! The question is, what should I do in this now unplanned year off? To my mind, a bit more work is in order and then perhaps going to help build a school or similar abroad? Any ideas?
Have you thought of recontacing the AIB or your local recruiting office? Try and get some feedback from them (I appreciate it will all have changed since I passed the AIB in 1988), and see what your best course of action is.
What about something like Operation Raleigh or VSO in the meantime? If you do decide to resit AIB, these will only go in your favour.

Thanks guys, will get in touch with these organisations and see what I can do. My mum has pointed out that maybe I could also look at the Police, so may well check their recruiting site out as an alternative to law school. She said they used to do some sort of fast track for graduates but I don't know. Worth looking at though I think anyway.
AIB said that I was only a few points off being selected for training but as they have had a rush of people pass and want to go in asap so i was just unlucky.

I'm in a similar boat (boom-boom Ithankyou!) as I am applying for the police right now. What was originally a 4-6 month process has elogated to 18 months - if I've passed the assessment ok I will be looking at a July '05 start date. I started the process in Feb '04. I've been temping in the mean time, but it's not ideal. The police have a High Performance Development Course which aims to fast-track you to Inspector in 7 years. Lots of people in my potential intake seem to have applied for it. You still do your 2 years probation on the streets with everyone else. I spoke to a few serving officers about it, and the concensus was it was great for making you a manager, not so great for making you a very capable police officer. Personally I'm undecided, but will probably not apply for it.
WRT what to do if you still go the RN route, a good friend of mine spent several highly enjoyable years as voluntary crew on modern replicas of sailing ships. I can get more details if you'd like. It's a charity venture with a fleet of two vessels.

Get your self into the RN young man, i spent 8 of my best years in there, thoroughly enjoyed it, travelled the world, made some ace mates, met quite a few foreign lasses too. Taught me all about discipline and the way forward, practiced the same type of discipline with my children and have 3 fantastic sons who are a pleasure to know, in fact one is my best mate, the other 2 need to "GET YOUR BLEEDIN~ ~AIRCUT" and "TAKE THE MAKEUP OFF BEFORE YOU COME ABOARD MY SHIP YOU `ORRIBLE IRK".
Joking aside, its a fantastic life and if i had the chance to relive my life then that is one of the bits i would live again, it great.

Alright guys, cheers for the advice. All seems positive and useful. Probably going to work till february now, and then go off to Africa to work on a game reserve preventing poaching and helping the local community. Seems like a worthwhile way to spend my time for three months (though no car out there I suspecet, damn it!) Then re-assess the situation, may look at the RAF as an intelligence officer, maybe the Army or still perhaps the police if the Met. are recruiting then. Otherwise I guess it's off to law school. Thanks for all your help guys. Most grateful.
