I've had a high interest savings account with ING for a few years now, I started back when the rate was 4.5% and they were offering free money to whoever signed up ($80 or so). There are some others which offer a slightly higher rate, but thats just a matter of shopping around and reading the fine print. The good thing about it is that its dead easy to set up and and you can access it any time you want. The only downside really is that you have to tie it to an existing bank account and its Internet only (maybe phone aswell). So if you do need to get the money out, you need to log on to INGs website, transfer to money across to your everyday account which takes a day or so. Otherwise I'm quite happy with it.

Been looking through the site today and 5% interest sounds really good. Is there a catch to it because I cant fine one but seems too good?!
not that especial considering my current a/c from the alliance & leicester pays 5.5%! shop around, you should be able to get 7% or so
try here for example

Sure,,,but that is not an instant access account, look at the clauses if you leave it there for less than the term specified,,,ING is about as good as it gets at the moment from a liquidity/return perspective.

Lois -
ING are pretty good , but both Abbey and the A.A's internet accounts offer better rates right now
Abbeys e-saver is around 5.4% with bonus ( 6 months ) , and the AA is about the same..... so you oculd always stick the money in at 5.4% for 6 months , then switch to ING when the bonus period runs out .
(its what I do - I'm a "rate tart")

There is a limit to what you can put into these "regular saver" accounts - they are a bit of a marketing gimmick IMHO - headline grabbing rates BUT the rate usually only holds for a year ( equiv. to 6 months as you have to drip feed the money in)
- if you work out the "extra" you will earn versus a normal ING / Abbey / Cahoot / A.A or other internet account its f**k all in absolute ££.

The first large acquisition was in 1995, when ING acquired Barings Bank
Mind you they do seem to be one of the beat rates around at the moment, everything else better seems to only be introductory bonuses so more work moving it around.
Hi Lois,
with working in the NHS you can be fairly confident of a regular income in the long term presuming you aren't going to change jobs.
I was in a similar position to you and wanted to do more so my IFA advised a versatile investment plan that is tax free so stops anyone getting at that hard earned cash(mine with Standard life). If you can afford to save a little each month I recommend this for medium to long term (@20yrs). For shorter term ie. for hols, xams etc get an internet savings account, they are all pretty good and give instant access.
You are still young but have a think about subsidising your pension as well as the IFA told me the NHS pension (? do you pay superannuation) is possibly going to be withdrawn or will be worth a lot less than it has historically been. I am only 27 but after reading around I have started paying into an extra pension too so I can retire earlier.
Hope this is helpful!

Full half hour I'm afraid 2 smokin barrels. I once rowed for England after beating some Southern fairies (Eton, Abingdon, Pangbourne) in trials. Still training but mostly on dry land as it's too windy in Sheffield and the water is crap.

And you're only 19? (Wo)man, I haven't got a clue about any of this stuff and I'm 21 on thursday!
I'm a good bar man though. (Allegedly)
There's more to me than meets the eye...bird with brains!
Pulling power...unfortunately the NHS don't pay me! The cheek as I'm running a few of these clinics now!
