Tuxedo advice ! Make me handsome!
Discussion
It is that time of the year again...
I need a new Tux. The old one looks like too many people have vomited on it too many times...
So tomorrow I am going to buy a new Tuxedo/ Dinner suit.
I have a pretty good idea of what I want
BUT
What about the shirt?
I am bored of getting a white shirt, and being a big tall chap I seem to blend with the staff of restaurants/ clubs and look like a bouncer....
Now a friend suggested I try a BLACK shirt. Apparently the bloke who runs Gucci, and George Michael have worn black shirts with a Tux and got away with it...
What does the ever stylish, debonair PH collective think of this ? Or am I making a big mistake, and traditional is best...
I'm just bored of looking like a waiter.
Someone suggested a white Tux like Tom Hanks in Big, but I don't know where to get one of those..

Don't even go there. White Tuxedos are so
How about a funky waistcoat?
I always think of that character in the fast show where the office party and waistcoats are concerned...
Sorry, no.
The "rules" are:
Dinner jacket - single breasted, satin finish lapels.
Trousers - flat fronted, vertical satin stripe down the oustide seam.
Waistcoat - black or white, depending on how formal the do is.
Cummerbund if no waistcoat worn.
No coloured wasitcoat/cummerbund/tie, unless you want to look like a complete tw@...
Tie - black, tie up not clip on/ready made.
Shirt - white, golf ball/marcella, no winged collar, unless you're at Buck House for a "posh" do. Shirt studs and double cuff.
Stiff fronted shirt with separate wing collar/studs if it really is a posh do.
Shoes - plain black Oxfords, properly polished, or "Mess Wellies" (Chelsea boots) if you're military.

ToppStuff old chum...
The classics are the best. Go with white (non wing) collared shirt.
If you are attempting to differentiate yourself from the wait staff, try a different set of studs and cufflinks (in my experience very few wait staff have silver and mother of pearl - they usually have the black plasticy garbage). You might also want to try a nice pocket square as wait staff hardly wear them.
...AS A VERY LAST RESORT you might want to try a patterned waistcoat and/or different colour tie. I would stay with darker colours if you go this route - a nice dar red (burgandy) or dark green.
Also as you are getting a new one, maybe go upscale to a good Brioni, Armani or Zegna. The fit and finish alone would probably make you stand out amongst the unwashed that view their DJ as a uniform...

But most waiters won't be wearing a jacket, and you will stand out further if your shirt isn't nylon and practically see through
Well, purchase haas been made, I'm sorted.
Classic traditional tuxedo ( Hugo Boss - but bought with a sizeable discount - is'nt great that all the shops have over-stocked and putting the sales on already !! )
It has a rather lurid purple lining to provide some individuality, even if others won't see it.
A decent cut, and best of all it fits perfectly right off the peg.
Looks like I am going traditional after all. Still, nice suit or not I'll still look like the big ugly bloke covering the door....
I still think it'll be only hours before some intern drinks too much and vomits on it though. It happened last time....
Now to decide if I go commando or not .....
Thanks for the advice !

I personally like occasionally breaking with tradition. I've got 3 'formal' get-ups:
1. The usual double-breasted 'penguin suit', black and white, good for college balls.
2. Higher-collared, single-breasted suit, looks great with a black-with-white-pinstripes shirt I've got. Add a silk bow tie into the mix. The trick is to have the various fabrics the same colour, but different textures and light sensetivity, so the various parts of the suit don't get lost within each other.
3. Tan-coloured Italian moleskin suit with a pale green lining, worn with a matching tie over a dark blue shirt. Really stands out without looking too garish. Also happens to be very, very comfortable. Lighter colours=perfect for hot rooms.
