England players not singing the national anthem

I agree, if you're playing for your country, then it's a matter of personal pride to sing the National Anthem - and surely it's part of the psyching up process, a mental 'hook' to being part of the team and doing something important for all the people who support you. Failure to do so is (to me) an indicator that you're just there for the money, and therefore less interesting than Ground Force.
What irritates me hugely (and I didn't see the beginning of tonight's match so this is a general point) is chewing gum open-mouthed during the National Anthem - this isn't the Top 40, you don't just sing along with the ones you like
. In fact eating anything with your mouth open at any time is a signifier of being a slack-jaw in my mind. Don't care whether you can kick a pig's bladder in a straight line or not, you're still a slopehead if you have to show me what you're chewing, particularly if you know you're on telly.
Was really pleased to see so many people stand for the National Anthem at Le Mans by the way. It's not about the Queen you know, it's about claiming our country from the low-lifes and being proud of who we are and how we live.

Great sentiments Nonegreen. Are you certain a presidency would be cheaper? More democratic? Better for the people?
The US got George W. We've got HMQ. You absolutely sure they did better than we did?
No actually the royals are just a costly irrelavance, what we have is President 800 lives saved by speed cameras Blair. The US got George W (mum where's my passport) Bush who has a vested interest in the oil industry. I reckon they did OK compared to us.
As for better for the people, that is really what this competition is for to entertain the masses. So why does our crappy national anthem not reflect the achievements of the British people (such as land of hope and glory or rule Brittania? Or better still the Dambusters theme, especially when playing Germany) instead of catterwauling on about the sad pensionner in the palace, who none of us know and in reality no one really cares a toss about particularly in the context of the football.
