Anybody know anything or got any thoughts on the above link?
I'm looking for a cool cheap classic that I can use for the odd trip to the shops etc...
I'm hoping this would cost next to f all to insure as I already pay enough for my TVR.
Thanks

Are parts readily available for this car?
What are the main things to look out for? I'm assuming rust?
Look for rust in the floors, engine bay and boot. Engine and drive train parts are readily available and at good prices, body panels are getting harder to get, front wings are like rocking horse st at the moment. Mk1s are very popular at the moment although a 4 door is not very desirable. I've seen 2 door racers with history going for £150K and a good 2 door RS or Mexico ETC. could fetch £20K+ or far more What are the main things to look out for? I'm assuming rust?
ahhh. My grandfather had a 1300xl from new. Slow, prehistoric dynamics and struggled to have more than 3 electrical things running at the same time, and also massively characterful. was sold for peanuts in very good running condition 12 years ago... now horrendously overpriced for what they are, though as mentioned there is the parts support, which is a benefit. I believe the car now has a 1800 engine, and a few subtle mods, to help with the wayward handling.
that car looks like trouble, and definitely not within your budget to sort it properly.
Edited because my post sounded far to harsh

There's lots of stuff out there, you need to open your eyes and look hard, Check out http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/ as well as ebay for cars that full into your price range, But keep and eye out for rust when viewing as you would expect, Also check out http://retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi it's full of helpful advice and also has a cars for sale board.
To give you an idea my last retro was this.
A 1975 BMW 1602, It was a fab car, cheap to run, nippy and gave plenty of looks, I sold it last year for £1650 with long Tax and mot, it had only covered 69000 miles.
I've now got this.
A 1972 Opel Kadett 1200, It's as mint as you like, Mega rare in this country, This one has only done 70000 miles with full history, tax exempt and only cost £1800.
Something to think about hey, Just don't expect something to turn up on your door step, You need to travel and view as many as you can, and expect to see some right sh*tters along the way.

standard wings are not that expensive around teh £100 mark, now mexico wings are £3-500 each depending on what make they are.
TBH if it was an easy job to MOT it the currentowner would have done it no ?
Could you point me to some front wings at those prices, or even at any price?TBH if it was an easy job to MOT it the currentowner would have done it no ?

Fill your boots - they are being remade in steel.
That's a bit out of date, you just can't get them at the moment. Here's a couple of pictures of my uncle's MK1 yesterday, just out of the paint shop.Fill your boots - they are being remade in steel.

The MK1 Escort and MK2 has skyrocketed in second hand value over the last 5 years regardless of type the problem is the higher end models the twin cams , Rs , mexicos were always going to command high prices , justified by the MK1 /2 Escorts racing / Rallying pedigree , now it appears every mark 1 regardless of wether its a 4 dr bog standard 1300L are in the mid 5,000-7k range even ropey examples are 3kAnybody know anything or got any thoughts on the above link?

Is this a bad thing , I think so because there is a market for first time Classic enthusiasts young drivers who are now priced out of the market
If you compare the MK1 capri as an example you can still pick up a decent workable example for under 2k , Although these will probably go the same way in a few years ?
But they are great cars to cut your teeth into "mechanics"
