OK, you know the story... few drinks, few friends and we're wondering what’s the biggest engine we can fit to a MKII Jag.

Assuming we start with a 240 body would a 90’s 4.2 XJ series engine and running gear fit ??

For now I need to stay away from the booze and ebay…

Cheers
Matt

Yup that is what Beacham & others do with their conversions.

Well I have seen the jag 4.0V8 supercharged one fitted into the Mk2 so I would then guess that the new 5.0L supercharged one would also fit. But I would be more concerned with the rear suspension or its ability to cope with 500+ bhp. But that is not in keeping with the pub talk topic.

I can testify that an Mk2 with only a 3.4 under the bonnet can shock a few euro boxed would love to worry a 911 driver with one with the blown 5.0L fitted. wink

The Beecham car is a modern XK with a Mk2 body on top, I thought.
I've seen a few and they don't look quite right, I'm not sure whether it is higher or whether it is just the big fat wheels tricking the eyes.

Not seen one of their XK150s, the E-Types look much more genuine.

Ohhh I just love the V12...

Is the 2.4 block (externally) much the same as say a 4.2 ..

Still dreaming !

The 2.4 is a shortened version of the block, I'm not too sure how many inches less tall it is than the 3.4,3.8,4.2 deck, but it's shorter. Paul (RW774) could probably say, I seem to remember he's done interesting things with the short deck engine.

It isn't unheard of to make a dyslexic Mk2 by swapping the 2.4 for a 4.2. I was looking at this myself a couple of years ago till the Mrs found out :-)

The 2.4 can produce alarming horsepwer these days, far more than a standard 4.2. It really depends on your budget. BUY 1, the Mk 1 that races at Goodwood, had one that was producing about 260bhp IIRC.

An NC head would be a "B" type "Squirrel" port head from an Mk9, I think all 2.8 heads would be straight port heads, so the inlet manifold will be different. The exhaust will probably fit OK.

I suspect that "BUY 1" has a nearly unlimited budget

Not exactly Ken. They are only a small company in Wales and aren't rich by any means. Yes, their engines are dear by comparison to transplanting a 4.2, but I was just pointing out that upping the power is possible.

I'm sure Paul Roach published some stuff here about tuning up the short deck engine a few years back. There are some advantages to the shorter stroke.

Back in the 70's, I always thought a turbo 2.4 might give interesting results. Has it ever been done?

Lowdrag,

Have you got more info/details/stories on the V12-engined MkII?

I do know tht that MK2 V12 was built by a company called Foxcraft Engineering based in Stockbridge about 15 years ago. The picture Tony (lowdrag) took of the car was at Le Mans 3 - 4 years ago, I know this as I was stood next to him and have exactly the same picture!. it is a stunning car and iirc is running E Type style rear suspension.

I thought the Beacham cars used an original Mk II shell but the strut towers were extensively modified to accommodate the supercharged 4.2 V8. I believe the strut towers themselves are moved & reshaped but the wings are otherwise unchanged.

A Mk11 doesn't have strut towers old son; in fact it doesn't have struts period! All the suspension components are on a subframe.

It may have been the subframe which was widened for the V8. There was a recent article in Jaguar World which alluded to significant sheet-metal work around the inner wings to allow the supercharged V8 to fit in there. I don't know the specifics - but apparently it's a pretty involved job.
