Britain's cheapest car to run PER MILE?
Discussion
If this was put up about 10 years ago I would probably have said 2cv as you could pick a decent one up for a few hundred quid. Service yourself, 2cyl at 602cc, air cooled, bomb proof engines and gearboxes etc etc. Probs get 45-50 to the gallon too if your careful.
I imagine nowadays it would be an old diesel saloon. Something like a mk1 passat. My dad sold his about 5 years back for £400 and it was really solid and in excellent mechanical order. Was getting about 52mpg from it. Maybe an old 320D or an old merc c class or something similar. I imagine a mk1 astra would be pretty cheap to keep too.

Those supercars don't work in reality because you have to factor in interest cost of the money - say 5% for £800,000 gives you £40K a year just for raising the money to buy it. So unless you can get an awesome interest rate for that money spare I reckon it would be very expensive with someone elses money. Plus their value tends to go down as mileage increases.
I'd say AX diesel. Had for sub £500 with T&T, parts are cheap and it was the most economical car for many many years. Plus insurance will be naff all.

I agree - Citroen AX 1.5D. I own one - €250 to buy and 70mpg on a long run - averages 60. Had to spend a bit to get it to pass its NCT (MOT).
A full tank lasts me almost two weeks pottering around and on my commute to work.
Hard to find decent ones now of course. Parts for the diesel engine and parts exclusive to the diesel model can be hard to find these days but Ebay is still a good source.
If you can't find one to suit the next best thing is the saxo / Pug 106 diesel as said above.
Have to have a 'real' car too though - I would die if I had to drive the AX 24/7.

That must be about the cheapest motoring can get.I recently paid £275 for an old Micra.
It had done 38,000 miles and came with 12 months MOT.
The problem with Micras is that there is no diesel. (apart from a few grey imports) The 998cc petrol motor will only do about 45mpg.
The main advantage is almost complete reliability. Apart from the occasional problems with cam chain tensioners, the only recurring problem is rot in the sills.
I have had three K11 Micras and they have been completely dependable. My current one is fifteen years old and still has its original exhaust.

Love it. A few years back a company I worked for had a 'pool' Micra 1 litre, which of course was used, abused, run around at max speed all over the country and generally neglected.
However, the poor tatty little thing was still going strong at 187,000 miles when I last borrowed it.
Amazing.
