I shall be building a new double garage in the coming months, and it would be good to have a car lift. I am eyeing a project either restoring a classic car or, maybe, building a kit car. However, the lift wouldn't be very heavily used, so it would be good not to have the inconvenience of a 2-post lift sitting in the middle of the garage.

A scissor lift seems to be a good solution since it doesn't take up too much room, and some leave a decent space between the two ramps. In fact I've just found a recessed lift which lies flush with the floor: http://www.automotechservices.co.uk/PDF/as-7330_ad... This seems to be a perfect compromise, and not too expensive either. I see that a compressed air supply is also needed, so that gives me an excuse to buy a compressor. Before I instruct the architect and builder to accommodate it, I am interested to hear other people's views.

Ive got a scissor lift and it's brilliant! I can lift upto 3t and it's mobile. Or you can set it in the ground

I fitted a four post lift in my garage which gives me the added bonus of an extra parking space

Yes the clue is indeed in the name, it's a 1947 Rover P2

She is a 16hp Sport Saloon model, also known as the four light. There are apparently only 25 known to be left in the world and only 10 of that 25 still on the road.

Anyone else into garage music? hehe

We set these flush with the floor, and while we were digging we dug and concreted a half metre deep pit through the middle of them to assist working on the underside of the cars.

Thanks to everyone for your comments.

The 4-post lift looks great for housing an extra car, but that isn't something that I need (yet?). I notice that the roof structure of the garage has been designed to allow the car to rise into the roof space.

I think that I am settled on a scissor lift for its compactness. Besides, I can use it as a sawhorse.
