A35, no brakes, no clutch (or crash box maybe) no tax, MOT or insurance. Thank God the plodmobile behind us didn't have ANPR in those days!!

A Mini, so near the point of disintegration that I was afraid to go over 40mph and I was only doing that much to try and shut up the complaining passengers who thought I was going too slowly and wouldn't listen to me telling them what a heap of st it was.

As a student, a friend's then virtually new Skoda S110R coupe (I think that is the correct model name) - the 'Rapid' coupe. Not only did it have a drilled alloy gearstick, which was actually just a sleeve over the standard gearstick and which wasn't properly burred off so that I cut my finger on it, but the tail suddenly jumped out of line on a 90 degree left hander. At low speed, fortunately. Definitely not the best car for going around corners, but at least you couldn't miss it in its lime green paintwork and plastic 'alloy' wheeltrims. driving

Morris Marina 1750TC, wouldn't stay in a straight line (anywhere), just tried to wander off the road at every opportunity.

i drove a series 111 xj12. the steering wheel did not appear to be connected to wheels. a warning light was taped up. a big chunk of paint was missing of the o/s wing.
this was one of the last series 111 v12s and had been described as "mint," by the seller.
i was hoping that it would be similar to my xj6 but with more power. all i can think was that it had been crashed and badly repaired

1921 GN - two torquey cylinders making a racket, steering less than one turn lock-to-lock, no appreciable brakes, no diff, no instruments, broadly no bodywork and instant oversteer.

Was fabulous!

If you'd said XJ6, I'd have swore I bought that car. Closer inspection on getting home found the steering column universal joint secured using split pins instead of bolts.

I went through a phase whereby I was a little nervous of anything I'd worked on myself - finding other people's bodges soon helped me get over that.

Don't think I've ever been 'scared' driving any 'old' or classic vehicle....??

A few have been challenging.... but never scary.

Tough question...

Could be the Mini that was more or less foot to the floor to keep up with motorway traffic...and a sticking throttle cable that you discovered when you reached your turn-off...assuming the dodgy bonnet catch had held and not flipped the bonnet up at 70MPH before go got there.

Or it could be a friends Triumph-based, MG Tx-wannabe kit car. You don't really sit IN it, just balance on top of it and scares the hell out of me at 20MPH. Hate to think what it's like any faster (and not keen to find out).

1971 850cc Mini. I bought it for £20 and drove it home. It had non inertia seatbelts which seemed next to useless, the drivers door wouldnt shut so you had to hang onto it, one a panel wasnt attached so was flapping about and I couldnt rest my feet on the floorpan as they went straight through it was rotten so much. It had the old "pudding stirrer" gearbox where the gear lever went under the dash somewhere and was about as vague as wiggling a stick in a bucket as to whether it found a gear or not. I drove it the short distance home with no tax, insurance or MOT (young and foolish), I pulled in the driveway and found that the brakes didnt work... much pumping and using the handbrake managed to get it stopped. Pressed the horn button to let my parents know I was home and even the horn didnt work!

A couple of weeks ago on an island in the West Indies a Mini Moke , it was bright Purple had bits and pieces hanging off all over the place but started ok and looked just like the one I drove in 1968 !

However this one could not get up the hill to the house we had rented , the handbrake would not hold it as I tried to start it after it had stalled half way up and the brakes would not stop it as we drifted backwards to the main road , which being where we were was not busy and we came to stop eventually !

Rented a Suzuki for the rest of the holiday...'nuf said .

1930s three wheel Morgan F type super sports - horrible.

It used to drive in a straight line for a varying period of time to let you think all was well then for no apparent reason to any right mind, the rear wheel would step across by what felt like six inches and frighten the blessed life out of you.
It always felt as though the rear was trying to overtake the front, even in a straight line.

Had it for three weeks only and sold it on.

not mine but my dad had one of those, the rear drivers side door came open round corners a couple of times smile

i 'helped' him service it once, started it up with too many revs (was only about 5) and shredded his haynes manual as it fell into the engine bay smile

i still have my scariest car, my series 2a landy, until i changed the steering box she would have a hissy fit with mad whiping of the steering wheel till you came to a halt and started off again, did this to me twice on southend sea-front about a month apart.

she also decided to have no brakes once as i headed shrply towards the back of an escort sat at a red light. never found out why, and she never did it again. hopefully she is going to get a rebuild next september smile

A Willys Jeep I had for a couple of years. It was great fun but one day when I was flat out doing around 47mph I had to break suddenly and nearly ended up in the ditch, then the middle of the road, then back towards the ditch, back to the other side of the road and finally back in a straight line. Ruined my best pants that day!!!

My pal's V8 converted TR7
came to a corner doing 90, steer left, nothing happens
stamp accelerator and steer right ... get around corner
from the outside i must have looked like a drifting god in every corner
from the inside i have no idea how I got the car back in 1 piece.
