Hi

I have never posted in this section before, but i currently have the hankering for a classic car. Ideally I have a budget of up to £10k but less is more in my eyes. What would you guys suggest?? It would be used around once a week and not garaged but will be covered

Any ideas??

You have to start with your requirements.

Motorway driving, sports car/saloon, own maintenance, era? But above all what do you fancy? Classics are rarely a sensible option you need to choose with your heart buy with your head.

MG's, Mini's and Triumph's are always popular with great parts supply but won't satisfy your itch if you really want a Rover, Jaguar or Humber.

Yeah, give us a bit to go on here, what do you like, sports cars, saloons or what? biggrin

An MGBGT V8 would be a great car for around £8k for a really nice one.

My personal fave of sub-£10k cars at the moment though is this for just sticking it in gear and cruising about in:

That Jag would be perfect for taking my parents on trips, and was made in the year of my birth, but I have too many cars already.

I would be tempted to go for a convertible, purely so you can enjoy it more on summer days and not feel as though you're in a slower less reliable version of your day car.

Triumph Stag, MG C, some MG As, Lotus Elan, Alfa Spider, TR4 / 4A all come to mind.

Can you find an M635csi for that sort of money or an E28 M5?

Only thing is, on the Euro-spec cars the timing chains need to be changed around 100k miles or so.

You'll have to give us YOUR definition of a classic car too laugh. Are the 80s in there? Are you thinking 60s/70s?

I think the OP would struggle to find a decent one of either for sub-£10k. Decent M6s start at about £13k. And there were only about 190 RHD M5s, so they come up for sale very, very rarely.

Classics for me mean anything older then 1990 smile.

Either soft or hard top. Not really that fussed, I quite like 968's but dont think they have hit classic status yet

Go for an old Yank, sonething with the 350 chevy lump in, cheap as chips for parts, and build to last, try early 70's muscle.

proper useable classic = bmw 2002tii

they're getting a bit keen on price now.

what about going for soemthing currently on the cusp like an e21 323i? arguably more modern than an e30 in many respects but more old skool styling etc.

must be able to get an awesome one where a nerd has replaced all the chrome etc and polished it all left right and centre for 6 grand (non??)

Go for a 968 - it's the very definition of a classic*

*I might be biased as mine is in the classifieds at the moment

I was thinking about these ealier on today as they were my first realisation of Audis when I was a kid.

£10k's gotta be a bit steep though, possibly if it was a really nice 100 Coupe, but a saloon? confused
