Hi.

We are having our MGB restored and want to have it resprayed.

We are not able to do any prep ourselves. We want a decent job done, so that we don't have to start again in 5 years.

Any ideas?

As you seem to be located in Switzerland, and you're posting here on PH I'm guessing you would be prepared to send the car away for the work.

If so I would recommend the chaps at Surface and Design who have been doing great work on metal bodies as well as the plastic stuff over the past couple of years.

They can practice on your B, and do mine if it's good enough. wink

Well if you are thinking about sending the car away, S&D are on Bristol Ave, Bispham, Blackpool, and they are good.

I'd like to know if, seeing the car is being restored, the car has been stripped, since that would make a lot of difference. For example, painting an engine bay with the engine in situ isn't really possible, and if the car is having a full restoration then a bare metal respray would be advisable. That way any rust will be spotted and restored beforehand. If this is the case, then you'll have a car that will last you for many a year. My E-type was bare metal resprayed 23 years back and has done 90,000 miles since, and is only just showing slight traces around the edges, none of which is serious. And forget the concours - use stone-chip paint underneath if you are going to use the car.

But as to who should do it, I'd recommend you join one of the MG clubs and ask the advice of members local to where your car is in Scotland. I've always found that the best information in this respect is found at ground level from people who've found out the hard way which are the good and the bad paintshops. A quick Google came up with these results which might be a starting point and be of help. The membership fee will pay for itself in spades.
