Hi There i think you need to check your dates. Reg 27-04-1973, Taxation Class: Historic Vehicle. For 10 years this has been tax free.

its date of manufacture - not date of first registration

thats how all these classics getting imported get 'historic' status

For historic vehicles if you can prove it was built before the cut off it is tax exempt, I have heard/read that the DVLA gave a certain leeway, i.e registered in the first 3 months and they would happily accept it had been built before the cut off.

I've read of several minis that have been manufactured in 1972 but not registered until well into or even late '73 that have been given historic tax status with no problem.

If you apply for a Heritage Certificate it will give the day of manufacture. My Vitesse was registered March 67 and built Dec 66 so it is entirely possible that Spit is legitimately tax exempt.

The link in the first post clearly states 'manufactured', not registered, for historic status.

you can work it out from the VIN Plate as to the date it rolled off the production line anyone who knows their onions will know how to decode the VIN Plate and yes it is manufacture not registration as had had to decode Ford VIN Plates for tax exemption and also for CAT Removal on cars around 92 manufacture date in relation to removal of the CAT and emmissions tests

It's date of manufacture. 4 months is about right for BLMC back then, so it's rather likely this car is exempt/

As stated above it is definately date of manufacture. I think there are even cars out there with 74 - 75 reg that are tax exempt.

More importantly how on earth does he think that is worth 5k? I bought my Spit 1500 a month or two ago for £1900 and it is in as good cond as this!

I can confirm that the cut off date is based on the date of manufacture.

I researched this a few years ago as I have a Lancia first registered on an 'M' in mid 73.

On enquiring with the club, the secretary kindly wrote me a letter stating that although original factory records are not available for my chassis number, the car is of a model which was not manufactured later than 1972'

Took the letter to the local DVLA and they were happy to accept it.

Occasionally see ads where the seller claims the car is tax exempt, believing the rolling 25 years is still the requirement. Damn shame it isn't, mines a '78. frown

lol.
yesterday, I saw an advert for a hifi amp that was "brand new but ex demo". It was discontinued in 1999. However, the advert was based in Bradford, so what do you expect?
