Just how difficult is it to actually change one?

Haynes manual makes it sound like its easier to rebuild the engine under water upside down than change the matrix...

Is there a metal 'box' type cover in the engine bay behind the matrix?

On the Camaro, the official line was dash out even the unofficial bodge* was remove inner wing before that would come off and involved blocks of wood...

Or - rag wrapped hacksaw blade, cut the cover in 2 bits, change matrix, file down cut edges, refit then tape over entire cover with heat reflective tape so nobody knows amd even looks a bit 'motor-sporty' whistle

No idea if that would work or on a B, but good luck.

no it's not a difficult job, most difficult bit is getting all the mounting screws back in

fully flush, back flush, clean, flush, back flush and fully flush again whilst all the time shaking the matrix

make sure all seals are in good condition (inc fresh air flap seal)

you could also check the heater valve is not blocked and they sieze up due to lack of present or previous use
