I'm on the edge of getting rid of the B, the mix of st weather, no garage and the fact its going to take a considerable amount of time and money to get the car to where I would want it is pushing me towards cutting my losses.

But if I do what should I buy instead? I'll say now yes I can get classic insurance at 17 and am already on a classic policy so please don't try and tell me I cant get it. And don't try and convince me to keep the B! smile

The current ideas floating around my head are:
-Porsche 924 - Cheap as chips to buy and if I get an early 2.0l I might be able to insure it
-Mk 3 Capri 1.6/2.0 - Again quite cheap to buy and more than likely insurable.
-Dolomite - Possibly a sprint but again 2.0l might be a push to far on insurance?
-Scimitar GTE - I liked the idea until I realised they were 3.0 V6s! hehe

More ideas welcome!
I was also thinking about a Mini but they seem quite expensive to buy now!

Number of seats is irelevant and a heater would be nice! Maybe even a heated rear screen if we're going all mod cons hehe

all those cars listed will need as much time/money/hassle as the one you've got.

can you insure an mx5?

They wont if I don't start ripping them apart hehe

Not sure if I can insure an MX5 but to be honest I'm not sure if I like the look of them or not

you will. either that or they'll rip themselves apart if you're unlucky!

i mention the mx5 as it has the feel of a classic open top 2 seater but with a lot less trouble. if you don't like the look tho, that probly won't be enough. they are excellent to drive though.

Of those listed I'd get the 924: likely to be the most relaible, have the least rust, be the most useable everyday and is now pronbably the cheapest of the lot, so many are broken for spares (usual caveats apply to all those statements above!)

The 924S is a lot quicker but might not be more to insure. Also check the 944 prices.

How about somehting from Japan from the late 80s/90s?? Mk1 or 2 MR2, Celica? Old Supra?

I never realised MR2s were so cheap, But I'm not sure on the insurance at 17. I would expect insurers see them as 'boy racer' cars?

Supras look to be out of budget but again I think Celicas and Supras may be too much of a push on insurance.

If only they didn't put 3.0 V6s in Scimitars! hehe

How about a BMW E30 3-Series?

The six-pots sounds nice but could be heavy on insurance.

It's often reported that the four cylinder cars handle very nicely, a 318is is actually quite stealthy, and might be below the insuracne comanies' radar, as it were.

Looking at an '88 on eBay as we speak.
This is one to add to the list to quiz the insurance company on!

All of the cars you mention are nice and having just bought a cheap classic myself (ended up with a Spitfire) I have considered all of them.

However I looked at porsches admittedly 944s and 938s but I couldn't get insurance - and I'm 25.

What about something like a 2door Volvo amazon or a Cortina? I think saloons are generally alot cheaper to insure.

Don't pretend it won't cost you money to keep though everything old does!

yes I know they'll cost to run just I won't try and do silly things with them. Not until I have a garage and money anyway!

Amazons are expensive but I'd love a Mk 3 Cortina

my list would look something like this-

1) 2CV
- might struggle to get a decent cheap one. Although they are really easy to work on and parts are really cheap

b) Renault 5
- lovely little cars that you can get for a few hundred nowadays...

iii) Some form of Kit car
- Not particularly practical, although they are a lot of fun, even cheap stty ones...

four) Morris 1000 or traveller
-just great looking little cars, relatively inexpensive too for a 1000.

Well they told me no chance on the BMW, Capri (even a 1.6!) and no chance on the 924.

Then I was talking to someone for a quote on a Spitfire and I got cut off when he put me on hold.

How about a Scimitar Sabre instead? The 1400 is Group 7 and the 1800 turbo group 12.

Golf Driver mk1 or mk2?

Plenty in PH classifieds or even a Beetle? - Assuming a GTI, early Scirocco, TR7, E21 0r E30 316 will be uninsurable.
