Hi I'm thinking of a 924 as a daily driver (cheap to buy, I can fix it/service it myself simple VW/Audi 4 pot + galvanised steel bodywork)

Lackluster performance doesnt worry me. I see it as an upto date MGB GT. Any real downsides?

Very good replacement for a BGT, same problems too, bullet proof car but rots in the same places (sills, bottom of front wings and in to the floors if allowed to get really bad).

Get a good on though and although fairly slow they are good fun to drive. Very cheap and reliable to run.

The 924S which has the slightly detuned 944 motor - would be the pick of the bunch.

watch out for parts prices on the 924S though and not really an engine the average guy can work on

I loved my 924. Bought it for about £850 off ebay, ran it for 6 months and sold it for what I paid.

Not quick, but low (so felt quicker) and it really carried its speed through corners.

I seem to remember something to do with the aerodynamics caused exhaust gas to get drawn in through the rear hatch due to worn seals. But seals were readily available and easily replaced. And the sunroof catches were a bit fragile.

Hmmm....I might get another come the springtime....

More performance is always tempting but in this instance ................................... I want to keep it simple and cheap.

I hoped the galvanised steel the body work would be less fragile than an MGB

My uncle in Liverpool has a nice 924 which he'd probably be willing to part with - but to top off the lack of performance his is an auto nono

Otherwise I may have taken it off his hands myself some time ago.

For their age they are good in terms of rust and are a hundred times better than any old MG re rot just bear in mind a 924 is between 23 and 32 yes old, I'd go for for a 2.5 s model if you can find one

A 968 is what you want . . . but at a cost.

924 can be a budget eater so I am told. Buy a good one!

Not too sure of your budget but if it's 1.5k+ then I would also consider a 944 as they are equally easy to work on and just as reliable. Otherwise the 924 is a fine choice and will put a smile on your face everytime you use it as Ferry intended.

A lot more 944's around to choose from and I may look (be tempted) but I can get a really good 924 for the price of an average 944.

Personally, if it's for a daily driver, i'd just find the nicest 924/944 you can pick up. If it were me, i'd be focusing on the chassis / body being good as I wouldn't want to be hunting around for too many Porsche body panels on a shoe-string.

My boss keeps telling me to shop in the B and buy a 924!

Do it, from what he says they are cheap as chips and handle bloody well

I thought about getting one last year, but bought a cheap Sapphire Cosworth instead

Wish I'd bought a 924 frown

Really?? If i'm honest, i'm not a huge fan of the Cosworth dash but other than that, I think they have real character and the 'cossie' engine, when not played with on a budget, is a cracking lump.

The 924 is nice in a different way I guess.
