Sorry I'm going to vote against this.
My memory of the Mk2 GTI was them being god awful cars.
The mechanical fuel injection system that often took ages to start
The yawning great chasm in the gear range (I think it was between second and third)
and above all else
The hopeless brakes

Having driven a quite a few of them back in period, as you've guessed it wouldn't be my first choice.
