hey,

I'm gonna be going to the US around 2014 to buy and import a 1967-68 Mustang Fastback into the UK. I know that you have to pay tax on the car on importing it but I have no idea how much or even how much it would be to import it (I was told by a colleague I would be looking around £1500 to physicaly import it but I don't know how valid that claim is). Plus I have no idea what paperwork I would need to complete to get it registered over here.

I went onto the DVLA site to try and find the answers but either i'm just being blind or the site really was that rubbish and wouldn't explain how much it would be/the correct process to get it registered if the vehicle was over 10 years old.

Any answers/help/advice/relevant links would be appreciated, thanks.

done it a few times.

you can choose either in a container (about £1200) or roll on/off from the deck (£900). its easier to get a specialist shipper to do it for you.

once here its 10% import duty on the cost of the car and shipping then 17.5%VAT on top of all that. Do it before it becomes 20% VAT next year.

to register it you will need the equivilant log book from the states, an MOT cert (need some stuff converted like lights, orange front and rear indicators), the right form filled out and some cash for admin. take to the DVLA local office.

you may also have to take the car to be inpsected at the DVLA office, but I didn't either time.

I brought a 1965 TVR Griffith back from the US a few years ago. I used CARS who managed all the logistics including getting it to an east coast port, customs etc. They were cute and managed to get the VAT reduced to 5% as it was an historically important vehicle which more than covered their fee.

In all it cost me about £4-5000 for everything but the tax charge obviously depends on the value of the vehicle

Do you really need to go to the states for the car?The german site "Mobile.de" currently has 500+ mustangs from 1965-70.Much easier to import you really could drive home with the car if you chose.Cheapest runner is €4k upto an eyewatering €249k for a '68 500GT.

Heres the current list, when you click on a particular car "bilder" is the photo gallery, and under the dealer details theres a link to the dealer home page. Also theres no UK taxes to pay .Buying from a dealer will get you temparary plates and german equivalent MOT test .Insure in the UK using the VIN number drive home. Also if you compromise older than 1966 cars don't need amber indicators.
Good luck!

That German site's not bad. I've got a few mates that live in Austria aswell so translation won't be a problem.

It's another thing to take into consideration but in the end it's really just gonna come down to what cars are available at the time and they're cost and everything.

Who knows, I might get rediculously lucky and find one in the UK I like that's not extortionately exspensive......but I very much doubt that :P

But to be honest the idea of no UK TAX does sound appealing, would save me a few grand that could be spent on any work the car might need/I want done :P

And nah it has to be a 67-68, soley because of the shape of the front. I honestly don't think there's a better looking muscle car than a 67-68 Fastback.

But still think it would be criminal to modify a classic Mustang in any way to make it look like somthing it isn't, so therefore couldn't get a 66 and change the front......even though it would mean I wouldn't need amber indicators which does sound awesome.

With you 110 percent , if I ever get the chance I will be doing the same. Also if you go and find it then it will be far more personal to you , as in you went and found it not just saw it on an importers website , there is no finer sounding and looking 60s musclecar on the planet , they really are something else.
