I guess like a lot of us I have an old biscuit tin in which I chuck old nuts & bolts and washers and stuff that I think may come in useful. My dad worked at Acton Depot so I used to have loads of stuff used for screwing tube trains together wink and as my brother and I stripped down cars we always keep the loose bolts but finally after 40 years I seem to be running out eek

I was just doing a job and needed a couple of countersunk threaded screws (bolts to you and me) with washers and nuts to match but couldn't find anything in any of my tins. I'm talking about old whitworth or BA threads for the Aston. I can't imaging popping round to Halfords or Homebase would help so where do you chaps look for thing like this? Oh I also need a wing nut which clamps down my jack handle, again it will be an imperial thread so finding one to match will be hard I presume?

Ideas?

I find Namrick pretty good http://www.namrick.co.uk/

If you have a good local engineers supplier, in Southampton we have Lawson HIS.

You might also try ebay, small qty's of odd bolts and washers are cheap and quick to find, not so much BSF and BSW as i suspect your Aston is mostly. But plently of UNC/F and metric on there.

Thanks for the tips... that looks like an interesting web site, the sort of thing my wife says what are you looking at on your PC and when I show she rolls her eyes wink

Indeed looks like they've got what I want but next question, how do I figure out if I need UNF, BSF etc. Is there an easy way to tell the different threads?

Wentin are good - it's also worth investing in a thread gauge.

Ah a thread gauge, do you need a different one for each type of thread or are they universal?

ETA - Oh I see, they are like feeler gauges, so presumably you measure the diameter of the bolt and work out the thread with the gauge?

I've never bought one - mine's older than I am - but it has different 'feelers' for each of a reasonable range of combinations of thread design, diameter and pitch.

I found a few places on eBay that sell imperial machine screws, nuts and bolts. I've spoken to a couple and they sound like the old fashion shops I remember from 25 or so years ago when there were at least three difference shops in my area (Wembley/Harrow border) that specialise in selling such things from bolts bigger than anything I've seen on a car right the way down to grub screws with 1/32" shanks, "1/32" ? Yes I stock those, what lengths do you want Sir?" (plus taps and allen keys) for some micro manipulator probes I was having built at work.

There is also a good shop in the high street in Camberley.

Sorry can't remember any names.

Then as others have said, Frosts, Machine Mart and Southern Carb (I think) who send you catalogues.

In Portsmouth, there is an excellent mech engineers shop called Touts.
any bolts etc needed he can supply them.
I needed 2 bolts for my Range rover to bolt, winch bumper, steering guard etc together so 20mm longer than the standard one.
Took 2 minutes for him to find and was priced reasonably.
Dont HAVE to buy a bag of 50....
