I don't know if I want a picture of said car as it'd probably make me sick thinking he's going to trash it.

considering the amount of indifference and even support when an XK150 got banger'd, I doubt if many people care on here.

It will look pretty cool going round a banger track, will need to do something about the 12hp bit if he doesnt want to get caught too quickly!

I went to a Classic Car show in Newbury on Sunday and it never fails to amaze me what cars people get enthusiatic about saving. There was a row of 5 or 6 Allegros there, why? they were not a good idea in the 70s who on earth wants one now? The only good thing about having this many in the same place is it would have been a good opportunity to scrap them in one go.

This type of thread is exactly why they do it... for shock value and publicity.

I remember going to a banger meet in Yarmouth years ago where they wheeled out an imaaculate (looking) Rolls Royce that aside from the liberal decals associated with certain local companies, looked like a resplendant ride.

Needless to say the first lap saw every other car on the track trying to get up close and personal with it.

Shame but inevitable.

On the flipside, some of these more 'desirable' cars must be ones taken from a scrap situation where it wasnt viable to fix them up so they are stripped, have some armco style re-inforcement slapped on, and they have they last great hoorah saying goodbye in style!?

I dont bother going to banger racing, or Greyhound racing etc as I end up wanting to take all the beaten up racers home with me.

I know, but having found the hysteria of the other thread so amusing for the last few days I couldnt resist starting it again, just being slightly mischevious I suppose. I personally could not care who smashes up what if it is owned by them, each to his own. The serious manner in which some people take these things is sometimes enough motivation to have a little poke like this.

Didn't someone "save" the XK150?
scratchchin

...

Oh no, hold on, someone bought it to dismantle it for spares, not restore it. I'd rather see it used for banger racing than used as a donor for another car. Same for the Rover. If there were lots of people out there wanting to restore thses cars, banger racers wouldn't be able to afford to buy them. The demand for restoration projects just isn't there.

I see your point, but I'd rather see the parts go to keeping other cars on the road than see them destroyed banger racing.

very much so. Not all parts are easy to come by. Although you can buy most bits, it is not all bits. Also many reproduction parts are not to the same standard as the originals.
Then there is the issue of price. A complete new XK150FHC body shell, less bonnet, boot and probably doors is £49K. Which is likely more than the value of the complete car (unless it is an original S, or there is something else very special about it).
A healthy supply of spares is necessary to allow many repairs/restorations. Two wrecks might make 1 good car.

One person who contacted me about that 150 was interested in buying it to restore because he wanted an 150 that he "could happily drive to the shops" rather than having something so perfect he was afraid to use.

We will never know what the full story of that 150 was. When Lawrence's mates first saw that 150 then it sounded like it was complete and in reasonable condition and probably worth quite a bit, but the owner wouldn't sell as a whole car. When Lawrence saw it, it has already been parted out.

Any old classic that is available for banger racing will have been decided is only worth scrap by someone, I'm guessing it will be stripped of any valuable or saleable parts then run till it dies or someone makes an offer that can't be refused.

So you're not serious about this then -

BTW your spelling of enthusiastic is incorrect and you’ve put a question mark mid sentence

A lot of the time the Rollers etc that are seen banger racing are merely bodywork grafted onto a donor vehicle - I read about one that had been stuck on a Range Rover chassis.

The owner did not want the car restored - hence it was rendered beyond economical repair when it was removed from his premises. Note also that Plonker has never revealed the chassis numbers or engine numbers, presumably because they have been removed. Does this not make you think that the identity of this car is alive and well elsewhere?
I reckon that other than the value of a couple of panels, Plonker has not done any harm.

Thanks for the reply, I do take my spelling and grammer seriously so appreciate your comments,it was silly of me not to read my post before posting. I will try harder from now on.

In answer to your question I am not really being serious and my comments were tongue in cheek. I was getting a little light relief from work. I do stand by my Austin Allegro comments though.

SB-Nigel.......you certainly did get me! I am pleased and deserved it.

I looked at your car list as well, always thought Skodas were quite cool, one of my school friends had a 110 coupe, always thought it was like a mini 911. Bright green it was just like an early 70s porsche colour as well.

Sorry but no budging on the Allegro hate thing though.

Cheers
