Why did jaguar fit 3.54.1 diffs to US spec E types ?

Because they were so down on power with all the emissions stuff on them they coudn't pull the skin of a rice pudding with a taller diff.
Added to that you can't do more than 65 mph there.

To be fair it wasn't until emission controls came in in California that they fitted them and with the strangled twin strombergs they lost, I think, about 40bhp pulling them down below 200. Many now are retrofitted with longer axles though.

Thanks for the info,so from that i can take it that a 3.54.1 is ideal for a uk spec hillclimb and sprinter

My memory, which is far from infallible, tells me that the series 2 California cars had as low as 170 bhp. Contributing factors were lower comp. ratios, strombergs, EGR, air pump, power steering pump and A/C pump. While I was doing my apprenticeship at Browns Lane I used drive the California, “rest of USA” and “rest of the world” spec. cars straight off the production line, the difference in performance/response was huge.
