Hi all,

My girlfriends Morris Minor currently has a bit of a fuel pump issue.

As soon as you turn the ignition on, the fuel pump ticks rapidly (seemingly at full speed) and will not slow down. The car will obviously not start as well as it seems to bog down which is understandable.

Does anybody know what might be causing this before i start ripping it all apart hehe

Thanks,

Lewis

With the Morris's SU pump its either the points getting burnt over time, although this usually results in the pump not 'ticking' at all. Pull the points out of it and either clean with some wet'n'dry or swap out for new points

OR

It could be a dodgy earth to the pump causing intermittent operation, just double check the wiring.

All else fails SU pumps aren't ridiculously priced.....buy new and fit

Hope some of that helps smile

actually...thinking about it...rapidly ticking without drawing fuel might be knackered seals, ergo no suction and no fuel...again either get replacement seals or a new pump

Yes before getting too far into the action make sure that the pipe from the tank into the pump is not blocked and all joints are tight. Sounds as if the pump is OK but can't draw any fuel.

She hasn't run out of petrol has she????? smile

Agree that it must be petrol starvation to the pump.

Mine always used to stop working and you just tapped it with a spanner to get it working again.

I would also suggest you look for a split pipe going into the pump as it will suck air far easier than fuel.
