Exhaust Baffles
Discussion
The baffles on my exhaust are shot. Not sure what's gone on in there but I'm reliably informed that they have had it.
Other than a bit of a boom when starting up and accelerating and comedy amounts of cracking and banging on deceleration (which I am not averse to) - what other affect will this have?
A new exhaust ain't cheap but if push comes to shove I will have to replace it. But in the meantime can anyone confirm that the baffles don't impact performance, fuel consumption etc - i.e. they are solely there as a silencer?

Could impact performance :-)Other than a bit of a boom when starting up and accelerating and comedy amounts of cracking and banging on deceleration (which I am not averse to) - what other affect will this have?

Could improve it with less back pressure.
Don't know whether you'd need to modify the tuning to fully take advantage of it.

Either way I think you are probably right - exhaust design is a specialist subject and the exhaust is designed for the specific engine. There's been a lively debate in the Ferrari/Lambo section along the lines of more noise can mean less power...
Replacements from here are good, fit well and not that expensive http://www.pdgough.com/default.asp?d=1
Excessive popping and banging can also be caused by an air leak (rust hole) sucking air into the system on the over run, wouldnt be the first time a 3x8 had small cracks / holes in the manifolds and down pipes (if you can call a lateral pipe a down pipe!)
Changing the back box, is also a good time to pull the manifolds and have them ceramic coated, the reduction in engine bay temp will make hot starting alot easier ..................although it’s not a fun job on the front set of pipes

pdgough make the Nuovalari exhaust I seem to recall - in which case I've already done my research and I would probably use them. I spoke to a guy on CS a few days back who was very happy with his.
Saying that I'd love to put another ANSA on. But I can't see a UK Supplier and I guess they would be a bit pricey?
My garage was pretty confident the baffles had gone - but there's probably rust holes too
...and rotten gaskets...
Hi Andy,
IIRC the Ansa's are still just mild steel and have a tendency to rust through quite quickly (based on how long they've lasted on cars I fettle), Ansa is part of Klarius group, I spoke to them a year or two ago and whilst they would supply, they wanted fairly hefty minimum orders, that just didnt make financial sense for me http://www.klarius.eu/Home/tabid/1252/Default.aspx
If it were my car, I'd get the PD Gough system (keep an eye out on fleabay), paint it black and paint the insides of teh tips red as well as renewing every gasket and o ring in the system

The ANSA on mine was fitted in the early 90's! - I reckon it's at least 15 years old (I'll check when I get home). It's probably the only bit of the car that hasn't rusted IIRC the Ansa's are still just mild steel and have a tendency to rust through quite quickly (based on how long they've lasted on cars I fettle)
