Hi , i have wanted to drive to the Stevio for a long time now but due to various factors i am on a very tight budget ,anyone interested in shareing expenses etc ? . Planning to go probably in my 89 Black Renault 5 GT-Turbo which is currently undergoing recomissioning , (Would love to do it in a Griff 500 if funds allow) in around June/july time ? Ime single (sadly divorced) straight and in my 40s but look younger , a femail travel companion would be ideal but not essential .
I have owned many Hot/Interesting cars/Bikes , a 69 Stingray , E-Types, 1980s 911s and a MUCH Missed Awesome Griff 500 HC ( N435-DDY Pearl Mallard Green/Blue , Where are you now ? Sold to a Dennis from Germany in 2008 )

in 1993 i took my 1986 Pearl White 5 GT Turbo ( complete with 2 bicycles strapped to the back of it ) down to San Tropez for a camping holiday . I had the drive of my life and in particular on the Route De Napoleon, that road was absolutely awesome and the scenery in that region of France is breathtakeing and I Still vividly remember the dice i had at night with a White 3.2 911 Carrera , he must have been a local and knew the roads well , unfortuneately i didnt ! ) it was a fantastic road then and i hope it still is . After visiting the Stelvio i may head down south to drive the Napoleon Route again . If any one is interested i look forward to hearing from them . R .

I've been meaning to do a similar trip down to Monaco then back up through the alps for a while now, but with me it's been an issue of finding the time, rather than the money. frown

Assuming you want to do the driving yourself, wouldn't you be better off placing a personal ad somewhere like the travel section of Gumtree?

You won't find many people hanging around on this forum who would want to be in the passenger seat on that sort of trip, and of those fewer still will be of the female persuasion...

Well , nothing ventured nothing gained... you are very fortuneate to be just short of time . As for the co driver if they were a competent driver then they could share the drive out there and if you have never driven a 5 Turbo try one , you may be suprised and a bit roomier than an Elan Sprint !

As for the site you mention , i think that thats the last place i would EVER put an advert on , i lost a sum of money ( deposit on a motorhome)last year to a thieving scumbag who disapeared after i had got the results on an hpi check. Typical, phone turned off and he never returned my calls . Wish i could name the low life on here. Reported it to the police , but suprise suprise i havnt heard a thing from them .

It's years since I've driven a 5 Turbo, but I certainly remember them as cracking little cars in their day and they would be a lot of fun on the alpine passes. There can't be many decent left these days?

You get scams and villains on all internet classifieds... even here on PistonHeads. Caveat emptor and all that.

YES.....Fun.... on the Alpine passes a 5 would be so much fun there is just something about the 5 Turbo , they are a "Real Drivers car" and driveng that Route De Napoleon was just amazeing in my first one ( the Phase 1 Version , (buit from late 85-87 ) which i had had lowered and had fitted a set of French "Record" gas Shockabsorbers ,lowering it ruined the ride quality and ground clearance but it would go around almost any corner as if on rails , the only thing i have driven so far that matched it as a drivers car is the 3 911s (SC and 3.2 Carreeras) i have owned .
I had bought it in Walthamstow with some light front end damage for aprox 900 quid and fitted a new Phase 2 front bumper to it and had the front wings painted. I remember it attracted a lot of interest from young French guys (C400 GME , where are you now ?) On leaving San Tropez we were running late for the ferry and from memory ? ime sure i did the drive back to Calais in 11 houres with 2 bicycles on a Halfords carrier lashed to the tailgate. A pal told me he did the same journey a couple of years before on his 1990 FZR-1000 Exup in 9 Houres !
I think ime on my 10th 5 GT-Turbo now and finding a decent unmodified/go boyed one is getting very hard. They used to be so common , particularly in "Tungsten Grey and Flash Red". (I almost wangled one as a company car in 89) The Electric Blue and Pearl White finished ones are very hard to find as it proved near impossible to get a matching paint finish (as i discovered) so Renault dropped these colours in i beleive 1988 and 89.
They all suffer from rust in the same places ( although fortuneately its not useually structural ) around the windscreen area , edges of the boot floor and the sills . Also many of them suffer water leaks from the bulkhead ? into the drivers footwell. Sunroofs if fitted can leak also . Engines are tough if regularly serviced but can blow head gaskets if the fan doesnt cut in corectly . Lots have for some reason had their side stripes removed and these are pricey and at the moment not available from renault .

The rarest of the pre GT-Turbo versions is the 1984/85 "LE CAR Model" , which was basically a Gordini Turbo , but with a cheaper interior spec( Mats instead of carpet and non metalic paint)and i beleive ? a sunroof as standard. I had a White B-Reg one with my .... of an ex wife in 1991, it was a great car and would do 120, and if my memory is correct those early ones are unuseual in only haveing 3 wheel secureing bolts. Reluctantly sold it in late 91 to a young guy from luton to finance a 69 350 cu 4 speed Corvette Stingray that i bought in Florida and shipped back. ( Very quick with the Edelbrock Equiped Motor i built for it but grossly overweight, a disapointing drive and difficult to drive fast in , as you cant see out of them very well and the width)
Cant find any photos of this 5 so cant check to see if its on the dvla site . I had another Silver Godini Turbo , Y or A reg , bought as a non runner , should have kept it .
The Phase 1 Gt-Turbo has far better steering than than the phase 2 version ,for some reason Renault altered the Castor/Camber on the phase 2 models( 87 to 91) and the turn in and steering feel is far superior on the earlier car ( if you have driven both you will know what i mean) but the phase 1 car is now getting very rare .
I havnt had the pleasure of the Original rear engined "TURBO 1 and 2" Cars, built 1979 ? to 84 , (some great shots of a Red ? one in a Roger Moore Bond film) . I have been told they are incredible to drive and very twitchy, but are now so expensive , i would love one but out of my price reach .

I remember seeing i think in Motoring News a photo of a Phase 1 GT on its roof with Andrew Rigeley hanging from the harness , think it was a 5 Race series he was driveing in , does any one remember this ? Would be great to see that picture again !

12 of us are doing 10 days at the end of June through the Vosges mountains, Switzerland, Italy and Monte Carlo, 10 cars and 2 Superbikes. If anyone knows a Netball team who fancies a free holiday, let me know. They can share our Hotel rooms and tents for free, they can just buy us beer ;-)

If that netball team come on board give me a shout.

As for the OP, isn't there a club scene to go with? I know there are loads of classic mini runs all over Europe so its not a problem for me. Why not find a road trip going that way and ask if you can join in the fun? Maybe a mini club would let you join in its a similar size.

Any one seen the latest 3 or 4 page Advert for the Gordini Twingo ? I Saw it today in C and S Magazine . Great to see that Renault appear to have revived the Gordini name for a Hot version of the twing .

The Advert mentions one of , if not THE Worlds Top driveing roads , "THE ROUTE DE NAPOLEON" . I was very pleased to see this mentioned in their add as i havnt yet spoken to anyone who has driven it .
I will NEVER EVER forget the drive i had on that very road in July 93 en Route to San Tropez for a Budget Camping holiday , with very soon to be wife ( now Very Sadly/Unfortuneately ex wife) and our Pearl White 1986 Phase 1 R5 GT-Turbo ,( C400-GME ) lowered and with 2 Bicycles lashed to a Halfords Cycle Carrier !!!
Memories of a Night time dice ( Bicycles Still lashed on the back ) with a Local who obviously knew the Roads far better than i , in his White 911 3.2 Carrera , i had to let him pass and he disapeered into the night .
That road and the Scenery were and hopefully still are ABSOLUTELY AWESOME . It was my 32nd Birthday dureing that Holliday and I have Very Happy Memories of that time and well remember parking up by a beautifull Lake for a Birthday Lunch and a quick swim and when life was far far better for me .
Ime really hopeing ( funds permitting )to drive that very same route this summer in my Black R5 GT-T .
