Ever just missed car of dreams?
Discussion
As the title, have you ever just missed that elusive car. Its just happened to me today, phoned for veiwing appointment to be advised that I have 2nd refusal on it. This is the same car I wanted to purchase about 5/6 years ago as well. I feel completely and utterly drained of car passion at the moment with just a glimmer that the first refusal candidate will not purchase.

Its the Vauxhall 14/40 sports saloon, 1926 vintage, its my perfect car. See it on carandclassic its the pale blue over black. Offers all that I would like as my main vintage car Selfishly I'm hoping against hope that I will get a chance to buy this beauty.
Why can't you ask the previous owner to pass on your details? That way you will hear if it ever goes on the market again. If it's an Auction house, then I can understand them avoiding this, but you could perhaps offer a finders fee for a private treaty sale?
My Dad has a 1934 Singer 9 Le Mans, i've always liked them and a few years ago we heard of one for sale. Went to see it, agreed to buy it. I said i'll go and get a bank loan and see you next weekend with the money. went back next weekend and the b*gger had sold it to someone else, and as far as i know it's still in bits in his garage!

Chap round the corner from me has one of these (I think, but it may be 1923) no shock absorbers, hand brake only....He sometimes trades his cars, let me know if you want me to follow up.
The car I would like to buy is being sold as an private sale, in fairness the seller has been good as his word to the first person interested and is giving him first refusal. If its still available this Saturday afternoon I will be purchasing Sunday for certain. However, should that car not be available I am interested in the possible alternative and would like to know more. Thanks for offer.

Thats a really dirty trick and contemptible. I also love the style of the Singer 9 Le Mans, the areo design of the coupe is delicious.crankedup said:

I dithered and procrastinated for a while, ended up walking away as I couldnt justify paying that much for a car to sit in the garage a lot of the time. Saw one recently up for 36K

As luck would have it I purchased the Vauxhall yesterday The first refusal transpired to be an dealer and I was second in the Q. Collect the car on Saturday, am I pleased? oh yes.
Good news. In the mid 60's my dad was a student driving round Eastern Europe and found a supercharged pre war Mercedes in a barn in CZ. There wasn't really anything he could do to get it home though. He mentions it from time to time...Merc' supercharged, oh my what a car that must have been, when its mentioned years later you just know it still hurts a little missing out on it.
I shall try and post some images up at weekend of my new stead. For a sneak preview www.carandclassic.co.uk its under the 1920 menu, pale blue over black Vauxhall 14/40. Can't wait for Saturday

I recently missed a 1 owner Rover 3500 SD1, Series 1.
The car was FREE to a member of the club who could collect as he wanted it to go to an enthusiast who would look after it, not sell it on.
It had been garaged safely since the mid 80's and although required re-commissioning it was pretty much mint and totally original.
The advert was on a club web-site minus the contact details for the owner.
After days trying to get the contact info (Ive been after a series 1 SD1 V8 for ages) I eventually managed to. When I spoke to him, the car had just been collected.
It's now up for sale. (Grrrrrrrr)

I am more than delighted for you CU. We often miss our dream car but to have the third bite at the cherry is exceptionable but, for the car, it must be delighted to have gone to a very good home. Going to be towing with it?
I think people of "our" age can always look back at cars we lost or even worse let slip through our fingers in days gone by, plus of course those we sold and now bitterly regret because the prices are so high. I remember being offered a BMW M1 for £18,000 and thought it too dear for example, but going further back I was gutted when Dad sold his Hudson for £25. I loved driving that car.
