he's been fiddling! frown

We got halfway through a simple plugs and oil change. Went to the pub and left the car for a week in his garage.

Phones me up to tell me he's put it all back together, but the rocker cover gasket was leaking out fresh oil. He's taken off the rocker cover and cleaned up the gasket, then SANDED the face of the cylinder head! yikes

Is it likely he's got much crap in the valve gear? Apparently he's had it running since, and I'm dreading the new engine I might need shortly!

Damn impatient old gits hehe

If he hit it with the orbital sander, then it might have finished it off. If it was a light touch with some emery paper, you should be hunky-dory. Got a great mental picture of an old man (in mk10 goggles) setting about a cylinder head with an angle grinder.......

Will find out on Sunday. Hoping some of this salt washes away soon so I can take him out for a run. Poor little mite has been couped up for ages!

I dont know how he would have 'cleaned up' the gasket? surely replaced it? On old motors its fairly common practice to use some fine paper to clean up the surfaces either side of a gasket to get old gunk (hardened oil marks etc) off before you fit a new gasket, and Id imagine if he knew that much he'd have known to clean it down really well before bolting it back down.

I could be wrong and its now full of grit but doubt anyone would have the knowledge to get that far and then make that big a balls of it.

I looked up the cost of a gasket online. £2.17!!!

Apparently, the gasket was in good nick but 'shiny' and hard, so he sanded it to soften up the faces and create a better seal. Got to say, it's done the job.

However, bits of sand floating around my camshaft makes my bumhole pout!

Got to love MG's , my midgets throwing one huge hissy fit after being made to drive down the M42/M40/M4 in the rain/sleet on sunday night, to top things off I got stuck begind a gritter for half a mile!

On the plus side (I also took it to my dads for a service) we only did the basic bits so i could get home again and discover any horror's at my leisure in my own garrage.

My poor girl is not enjoying the salt, gently corroding itself into a small pile of oxide. Bit of bubbling in all the normal placis. And shes coverd in that evil white haze.

Are we turning this into the MGB thread now? wink

If so (mechanically) mine needs the valve timings doing, carbs balancing and new main seal on the over drive.

Non-Mechanically, rebuild passengers seat, strip, paint and rebuild drivers seat (with new seat foam), fit door seals, passenger side rear window seal, boot seals, check for leaks behind GT badges, various rust treatment, new carpet set fitting and a few holes need plugging.

Got to love MGBs! biggrin

mines a re-shell so not a dot of rust on it (touch wood). But the electrical gremlins have been reeking havoc under the bonnet, the dam thing either wont start or cuts out the moment its taken out of gear. Got a nice long list of things to check over one weekend that's not valentines!
