Hi,

I picked up a flyer for these guys - http://www.theaveburycollection.co.uk - at the 1st Sunday Service in Mercedes Benz world earlier last year and am seriously thinking about joining. Is anyone on here a member and if so what do you think of the whole experience?

For me the price seems realistic, I love most of the cars available and I really like the fact there are no points, mileage restrictions etc etc, it seems you just pay your money and you take your allocation of days, job done.

Thanks

austin

Looking at the site they only have 5 cars.

A quick calculation and it only takes 60 members on the higher package and every day of the year all the cars are out.

If I was going to join one of these clubs I would want more cars to choose from.

I was thinking along a similar line Austin but having not been able to make it down to meet with the team yet I've no idea how many members they actually have. You'd hope they would be sensible with numbers but at the same time they have to run a business and I can imagine that happy medium must be pretty tough.

Anyone here have any experience of them?

Hi,
I am Amanda, and I own and run The Avebury Collection.

I have just spotted your post and would like the chance to add a little clarity to a couple of things.

We are a new club, possibly the newest and our aim is to develop the collection of cars as the membership base grows and in line with the type, variety and quality of cars that members prefer. It took quite a while to build the collection as, for those who have seen the cars will agree, they are in remarkable condition, both interior and exteriors are immaculate.

The 5 cars that we currently have comfortably satisfy our 5:1 maximum member to car ratio so there are no concerns as to availability. Should we reach the situation where we have 60 members we would have at least 12 cars.

Currently we are looking for a decent early Rolls Royce Shadow 1 to satisfy our family members, and we do have an immaculate 1989 5.7 Pontiac Firebird, which we are not sure about (someone described it as a "Marmite" car) but it rather landed in our lap! the votes will be counted on that one.

"The Engine Room" is always open on Tuesdays from 7 – 9pm but will open at any time that is convenient and at short notice if and when required.

I hope that you will find the time to drop in and see the cars and explore the membership benefits.

So, they have less than 25 members. Chances of one of them being on here slim. Maybe better for you as a potential member? My maths tells me that each car is only in use less than half a year, so when you want it more likely to be free.

Maybe ask "Avebury" to speak to an existing member or 2 for a reference?

I can understand why this may be of interest. It isn't for me, but if I had plenty of cash but lived in a flat with no parking, skills, or facilities maybe this is the way to enjoy hassle free classic motoring. It isn't cheap, but neither is owning an E Type!

If you think the price is good for what you get, then why not :-)

Thanks for this Amanda and it's reassuring to know about the 5:1 ratio you have. I'm going to try to get along in the next few weeks to the engine room to see the set up etc.

Just a reminder that we are open this evening from 7.00pm to 9.00pm, when we retire to the local watering hole. If anyone cares to drop in they will be very welcome.

Hello Amanda,

Could you please clarify a few points for me?

Firstly what time do your 'days' run from and to, so for example for a two day weekend would this run from 00.01am Saturday to 23.59pm on Sunday or do you operate a system where by you can pick up a car at say 6pm on a Friday evening and drop it off on the Monday morning at a cost of only two days? Similarly for one day's driving what time can the cars be picked up/returned?

Secondly is there a mileage limit to the cars at all?

Finally, and I apologise now for the forwardness of this question, but given the recent history of similar clubs and companies going into administration could you please clarify how the collection is funded and whether there any safeguards in place to protect members membership fees (such as monthly payments?)

Many thanks & kind regards

Ungarsee

Just been to visit the 'engine room' and I can vouch for the cars, they are all phenomenal, especially the 328 (thank you again for taking me out in it). It seems to be a proper enthusiasts club, run by enthusiasts with a real passion.

Assuming all goes to plan hopefully I'll be back soon to sign up

Hi Gymaint,

Thank you, these are all interesting and relevant questions.

Our policy on bookings, is a 2 day weekend can start from mid-day Friday to mid-day Monday (Assuming that the car is not already out and due for return on the Friday, or already booked out for the Monday). A daily booking is for any 24 hour period starting after 8.00 am. Having said this, provided the car is not due out with another member, we are extremely flexible.

Your second question regarding mileage limits - We have not felt the need to impose a mileage lilitation as the current useage has in all cases been reasonable.

Lastly, the recent history of Car Clubs hasn't made good reading. Both the finacial and metrological climate has been no ally to many leisure industries and I have a lot of sympathy for the casulties of this. It's difficult to know what safeguards we can offer. Because of the nature of the way the Club works it is hard to accept monthy payments. I would at this point like to clarify that I own all the cars in the collection, they are not leased. I would be pleased to discuss with with you further and please feel free to come and visit us.

Kind regards, Amanda
