Hi Chaps,

I have recently purchsed my first classic car (clue is in the title). Unsurprisingly the radio is not working (although I do have the original unit in the car). Can anyone reccommend where/who might be able to fix it for me.

Thanks in anticipation.

depends where you are in the country.

first of all make sure it is the original, not a becker mexico or similar which looks very similar. Either way, make sure that the radio is getting a good feed. If you dont' know how to do this, take it to a local radio shop (a proper one.. not a halfords). They should be able to get it repaired, some might not get them repaired in shop, but will send them away.

Don't necessarily look at this as a bad thing, I send alot of my repairs away to a company called AEL, who do a fantastic job everytime, they carry a 2 year warrenty and take less than a week to turn around. I could in no way get the job done so quickly and offer the warrenty that do.

Good Luck!

There are also companies that will build up a modern car radio inside your original unit.
If you look at the back of a lot of classic car mags you'll find adverts. Sorry I'm away from home and forgot to pack a pile of mags to read while I'm away so I can't point you at any at the moment.

Company called vintage wireless, repairs / sells these radios. As said I'd have it updated at the same time, i've got a radiomobile in my sons 1100 with I pod aux out and FM etc, works really well.

First make sure the radio is properly connected. If it still doesn't work, get a quote; for example from here:

I really wouldn't bother getting it repaired, you won't want to listen to MW/LW at 5 watts on a single seaker I assure you! As said you should get it converted to modern internals to provide FM reception and with a 4 x 40 amp and an iPod input. You can then conceal 4 modern speakers around the car yet have a totally original appearance. The cost will be around £350.
